DIY Guide: How to Wax Eyebrows at Home

Alright, let’s get straight into it!

Ok, let’s talk about eyebrows. Your brows? They’re like the frame to the artwork that is your face. And while I am all about a good brow gel, sometimes your brows need some serious TLC. Yeah, we could hit up a salon for that, but let’s be real: catching an appointment can be hard… AND if it’s right before a party? 😬 Nope. Enter: waxing your eyebrows at home.

Yes, DIY brow waxing might sound a little intimidating, but trust me—you’ve got this! With a little guidance, you can clean up those arches, shape them, and look like you’re living your best life—without stepping out of your house. Plus, it’s kinda fun (and oddly satisfying) to do them at home.

Let’s jump right in!

The Prep—Because You Can’t Just Go in with Wax 🤭

First things first, before you grab your wax and go all mad-scientist on your face, prep is life. You wouldn’t do a full makeup look without setting that base right? So let’s get everything ready.

Step 1: Get Your Brows Ready

Put the wax down (for now). This part is about making sure your brows are clean, happy, and prepped for a smooth waxing sesh.

  • Wash your face: Duh, right? But seriously, make sure there’s no makeup, oils, or residue going on. Clean skin equals a better wax.
  • Exfoliate: Gentlyyyy though. You don’t want irritated skin before you’ve even started.

PRO TIP:

Don’t wax right after you’ve worked out. Your skin’s already heated and sensitive from sweating. Chill out and let your skin calm down first.

Cool? Cool.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies—Yes, You Need All the Things

Time to pull everything together! Here’s your little shopping list of what you need to wax your brows, queen:

  • Wax kit: Duh. Hard wax kits are easiest (and less painful!) because they don’t need strips.
  • Wooden applicators: These come in the kit but if not, you can get some popsicle sticks for cheap.
  • Tweezers: For those baby stray hairs the wax just won’t catch.
  • Scissors: Yes, for trimming super-long brow hairs.
  • Brow brush/Spoolie: Just a lil’ brush-through will help get your brows in shape.
  • Post-wax oil/Serum: To soothe and moisturize.

Make sure you’ve got all these tools lined up so you’re not scrambling halfway through wax everywhere going “where are the scissors?!?!”.

Shaping & Mapping Your Brows Like a Pro 🎯

Before we even think about getting out the wax, it’s time to figure out what shape we’re going for. Otherwise, there’s a good chance you’ll overdo it…and we’ve all been there. (Flashback to middle school when over-plucked brows were A THING. Eesh!)

Step 1: Brush ‘Em

Use that spoolie to brush your brows up and out so you can see their natural shape. This helps you get an idea of how much hair is already where it’s supposed to be, and what needs to go.

Step 2: Use a Brow Pencil to Map ‘Em Out

We’re trying NOT to over-wax here! The trick to perfect brows is mapping, which is just a fancy way of saying, draw some guide lines so you don’t mess it up.

  • Find the start: Hold your brow pencil straight against your nose, the spot where it hits at the top (above your brow bones) is where your brows should start. Mark it there.
  • Find your arch: Angle that pencil from the edge of your nose to right through the middle of your eye. That’s where the highest point (or arch) of your brow should be.

  • Find the end: Last one! Line up the pencil from your nose to the outer corner of your eye. Where the pencil hits your brow is where your tail should end. Mark that too!

Not all brows are twins… they’re sisters. Don’t obsess about making them look identical!

Time to Wax, Wax Baby 🕺

Alright, you’ve prepped your skin, your shape is on lock, and your wax kit is ready. Let’s actually wax those bad boys.

Step 1: Heat Up Your Wax

If you’re working with a hard wax kit, make sure to follow the heating instructions on the box. Most kits nowadays either have microwave instructions or a little wax heater (which is my FAVE because it makes life easier).

Step 2: Do a Patch Test!

Srsly. I know you’re super excited but before you jump in, test a little wax on your wrist or jawline to make sure it’s not too hot. Scorched skin? No bueno.

Step 3: Apply Wax in the Right Direction

This is soooo key! You first want to apply wax in the direction of your hair growth:

  • Work on small areas at a time: Patience, my dude.
  • Use an applicator stick to apply the wax in the direction your brow hairs grow. Especially on your upper brow where you’re shaping that curve.
  • Give the wax a few seconds to dry but make sure it’s still a little tacky before you pull.

And here’s the trick: when you pull the wax off, pull opposite of your hair growth. Bonus points if you pull quickly like a bandaid! (PSA: Don’t hesitate mid-pull…trust me.)

Step 4: Shape a Little at a Time

Start around the brow first! Top, bottom, sides—wherever you feel safe. Avoid doing the middle of your brow right away if you’ve never waxed before. Tbh, that zone is where you’re most likely to slip up. So leave it for last and even consider using tweezers for small hairs.

Reminder: DO NOT wax the same area more than once; you’ll irritate your skin and it’s not worth it. You can always tweeze whatever’s left behind!

Tweezing After Waxing (Yup, Still Necessary 😆)

Even though waxing is 💯 one of the best methods to tidy up your brows, it’s not always perfect. There will be some stubborn little hairs chilling closer to the brow line or places that are too risky for wax.

So grab your tweezers (a.k.a. the real MVP) and just clean up the strays. You’ll also want to hit the middle-brow section/caterpillar situation since we didn’t touch that with wax.

Aftercare: What to Do Post-Wax (SUPER Important)

Your skin is gonna be lowkey crying after it’s been waxed. Redness? Yeah, that happens. But don’t just slap on makeup or go about your day—treat it right!

Step 1: Use Soothing Oil

Right after waxing, use a moisturizing oil or aloe gel. This helps calm the skin and gets rid of any leftover wax bits. Massage gently (but don’t rub or you’ll irritate your skin even more!).

Step 2: Avoid Makeup for a Bit

You wanna avoid makeup for at least 2 hours! I don’t care if you’ve got a hot date (or are just desperate for that selfie). You need to let your skin breathe, or the makeup can clog those freshly open pores. Ew.

Keep your brows big, bold, and beautiful…that means no makeup too soon!

Step 3: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

The next few days after waxing? Just keep that skin moisturized. Your skin will thank you.

Dos and Don’ts of Eyebrow Waxing

You made it this far! Woohooo! Before we wrap up though, let’s hit you with some quick…

Do:

  • Do use hard wax for your brows (it’s beginner-friendly).
  • Do clean your brows with an oil-free cleanser after waxing.
  • Do check your progress as you go: Don’t wait ‘til the end to realize you’ve over-waxed.

Don’t:

  • Don’t heat the wax until it’s super hot! You don’t want burns.
  • Don’t wax if you’ve just exfoliated a lot cuz your fresh skin will be HURTIN’.
  • Don’t wax over acne or broken skin (again ouch!!).

And there you have it, boss babes! With a little training and some patience, you’re gonna be waxing your eyebrows like a pro in no time. Keep that shape snatched, those brows on fleek (yes, I still say that 😎), and your confidence high!

Final words of wisdom? Don’t stress about tiny asymmetry. Remember: brows aren’t twins, they’re sisters. ✨

Now, go get your brow game on point!
