Fill ‘Em In: How to Fill in Eyebrows for Beginners

Alright, babes, let’s talk brows—because if there’s one facial feature I think we all obsess over these days, it’s eyebrows. Whether you’re scrolling TikTok or going down random YouTube rabbit holes, perfect, thick, and fluffy brows are everywhere. But, real talk: not everyone is naturally blessed with brow perfection. Some of us have patchy, uneven brows (yup, just calling it out right now) or just want to try a bolder look.

Lucky for you, I’m here to help with the absolute beginner guide to filling in those brows like a BOSS. 💥

You’re about to glow up those brows just like Charli D’Amelio’s TikTok dances are #onpoint!

Why You Shouldn’t Sleep on Your Brow Game 💤

Okay, so eyebrows are more important than some people give them credit for. They literally shape your face and can change your entire vibe. Think about it: Have you ever left out your brows when doing your makeup and felt like something was totally off? Yeaaa. Brows are like the finishing touch on your whole look, making sure it’s pulled together.

Oh, and another thing: Brows frame your eyes and can help you express yourself. Mad? Sad? Happy af? Yep, they do all of that. So, trust me, they’re a big deal, especially when they’re shaped and filled in the right way.

What You Need — The Brow Squad ⚡️

Before we get into actually filling in your brows, let’s talk about the tools you’ll need. You can’t become a brow pro if you’re not packing the right gear!

Here’s your brow squad (aka the essentials):

Brow Must-Have Why It’s Lit
Brow Pencil For precision and filling in those sparse spots. Try the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz or NYX Micro Brow Pencil (affordable AND bomb)!
Brow Powder To get a softer or natural look. You’ll need a solid blending brush too.
Brow Gel To hold the shape and keep things looking fluffy. Choose pomade-based ones for extra pigment or clear gel for a natural vibe (Glossier Boy Brow for the win)
Spoolie Brush Think of this as the diffuser for your brows. You’ll thank me later when your brows look all blended and soft.
Concealer For extra SHARPNESS under the brow. Step up your finessing game with a brush.

Girl, don’t stress—it sounds like a lot, but it’s really about practice. Plus, once you find your go-to products, this will become second nature. You’ll be zooming through your brow routine faster than you unlock the face filter on Insta! 🕶

Step 1: Brush your Brows to Perfection 🖌

Soo… before you grab that pencil, do yourself a favor and shapeshift—literally. Grab your spoolie brush (that little tool that looks like a mascara wand but isn’t) and start brushing your brows upward and outward. This gives you an idea of the true shape of your brows (aka where those sparse areas are hangin’ out) and gets them in place so filling them in will be way easier.

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to brush through them a couple of times. I mean, it’s like detangling your hair, but on a micro level… SAME thing!

Start by brushing your brows into their natural shape, this step is KEY, babes! Your natural flow helps the shading become seamless.

Step 2: Plot & Draw Your Outline ✍️

Now comes the ~fun part~! You’re going to outline your brows. This is like drawing a mapped route, but for your face (lol, no GPS needed here).

Using your brow pencil, we gon’ start by outlining under your brow first. Begin at the inner part of your brow (not too close to the center of your face unless you’re going FULL Cara Delevingne). Work the pencil gently—with light stroke movements—along the natural line of your brow.

Once the bottom outline is done, do the same thing on top, but stick to the natural arch.

Remember, we’re not going for blocky, drawn-on brows. Less is more here; you can always add after, but starting with too much? A risk we don’t like to take.

Step 3: It’s Fill Time 🖤

Okay, it’s time to fill in!

Take either your pencil or brow powder (whichever you’re feelin’) and use short, feather-like strokes to fill in the areas between your lines—this will create natural-looking hairs. This is especially helpful if you’ve got some annoyingly patchy or scarce brow spots (hellooo, overplucking trauma from middle school?!).

Feather those strokes, babe! Harsh lines look too obvious. The more natural, the better.

Start from the tail of your brow and work your way to the center—always working in quick little strokes. When you get to the front or beginning of your brow (you know, the part right near your nose?), keep it light and fluffy. Nothing looks weirder than when the front of your brows are darker than the rest. We need GRADIENT magic! ✨

Real talk: No solid clumps of pencil shading here. This is not 2014. No “Instagram brows” (unless you’re into that throwback vibe)! 😘

Step 4: BLEND BLEND BLEND 🌈

Now that there’s some product on your brows and they’re kinda looking filled, grab your spoolie brush again; it’s the unsung hero of any good brow. Start brushing through the entire brow. This step helps blend your penciling/powder in with your natural brow hairs.

Make sure you don’t go brush-crazy and erase all your hard work, lol. You just want to soften up the color so it doesn’t look harsh or overly dramatic.

Feel free to add a little more product where needed after you’ve blended, but remember: Less is more. You’re killing it already, I promise. 😘

Step 5: Lock it Down 🖋

Your brow masterpiece is almost done! To make sure all this beauty stays put—it’s brow gel time. Swooop.

Brow gels are life-changing, okay? They lock in your shape, keep your hairs in place, and some even add a little extra color. Sweep the wand over your brows in the same direction you brushed them earlier.

If you’re going for a more natural, fluffy brow, brush upward to give it that textured, “laminated” look. Or, if you want something sleeker, gently brush everything into place so they look firmer. Either way, brow gel gives you that “I woke up like this” vibe that won’t disappear halfway through the day. 😉

Pro Tip: For mega-hold, go for a pomade-based brow gel. Want a more lightweight finish? Clear gels are it!

BONUS Step: Define With Concealer ✨

Okay babe, this step is totally optional, but it’s one of my faves when I want to make my brows POP! If you want that sharp, crisp outline that all the IG influencers have, use a tiny bit of concealer (preferably one that matches your skin tone or is a smidge lighter!) under your brow arch and blend it out.

It’s also clutch for cleaning up any edges where you may have gotten a little too heavy-handed with your product (been there, done that).

Here’s where a fine concealer brush will come in handy. Just swipe a small line under your brow and blend that beauty out. You won’t even need a ton of concealer; a little goes a looong way.

Concealer under the brow? ✨ Total game changer for sharper edges!

Brow Fails to AVOID (Trust, I’ve Been There 😅)

Let’s be real—brow filling comes with its fails (lol). We’ve ALL had a bad brow day, and that’s okay because progress, not perfection, right? Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Going Too Dark: Super dark brows (ahem, black pencil on light brown hair???) can look super unnatural. Use a shade that matches your eyebrow hair (or slightly lighter if you want a soft vibe).
  2. Harsh Fronts: Oof, nothing looks worse than super blocky, dark fronts of your brows. Keep the front soft, a little faded, and trust me, you’ll thank me later.
  3. Skipping Spoolie Blending: That spoolie brush isn’t just for decoration—use it! Blending your pencil gives the most natural results, especially if you don’t want That Eyebrow Look™️ from 2016.
  4. Over-Plucking FIRST: Your natural shape is great! Don’t overpluck and try to reshape too much. Keep it natural, fam. Touch-up AFTER you fill in.

Final Thoughts (Nope, Just Kidding… This Ain’t Serious)

Okay, that’s it, bb! You’re officially going to become a master brow guru in no time. Remember, it’s alllll about practice and tweaking your technique until you’ve got something YOU feel bomb walking out in.

Seriously though, a good brow can change the way you feel (yeah, ask freaking Zendaya). It doesn’t matter if you’ve got naturally full brows or if you’re working with a tad bit of sparse action, there’s a technique and product out there for everyone.

So now it’s your turn. Go get filling, and show those beautiful brows of yours some MAD love. 🤍
