DIY Makeup: How to Make Eyeshadow at Home

Let’s be real, making your own eyeshadow at home sounds kind of epic, right? Like, why settle for basic store-bought colors when you can have full control over making your own custom shades that nobody else on the planet owns? You could be mixing up a batch in your kitchen, vibing to your favorite playlist, and suddenly—boom!—you’ve made your new favorite eyeshadow. Sounds like a vibe? Then let’s get into it, bestie!

Why Make Your Own Eyeshadow?

Okay, hear me out. Have you ever bought an eyeshadow palette, super hyped because the colors look insane, but then you get home and realize: 1) Why are they all glittery when you wanted something matte? And 2) The colors don’t even pop on your skin tone. UGH. That’s a huge no bueno.

When you make your own eyeshadow, you control everything. You’re the chef, the artist, the genius mastermind behind custom colors that suit your skin tone, mood, and even that random pastel aesthetic you’re vibing with today. Plus, DIY makeup is way better if you’re tryna avoid weird mystery ingredients (cough who even knows what half of those things listed on the back of our palettes are?). Making your own lets you know exactly what goes onto your skin, period.

Things You’ll Need (Don’t Worry—Nothing Fancy!)

Surprise surprise, making eyeshadow at home is way easier than it seems (and cheaper too!). You def don’t need a science lab setup. Most of this stuff you can find at your local craft store, Amazon, or tbh your pantry.

  • Mica Powder: You know this magical powder that gives you all that shine and shimmer? Mica is literally life. It’s what makes your eyeshadow pigmented and shimmery. Bonus: it’s super affordable and comes in basically every color you could ever want.
  • Kaolin Clay: This is the stuff that makes your eyeshadow smooth and blendable. Because let’s be honest, chalky eyeshadow is a no for me. We’re not trying to mess up flawless blends.
  • Rubbing Alcohol: To bind all the powders together before pressing them into pans.
  • Empty Eyeshadow Pans: You’re gonna need something to put all that colorful goodness into, right?
  • Mini Spray Bottle: Fill this with the rubbing alcohol—we’ll need it to finish everything off.
  • Powder Binder (optional): This is an ingredient that’ll make everything stick together better. But if you’re keeping it simple, just stick with the alcohol!
  • Measuring Spoons or Droppers: For measuring exact amounts. We wanna get that mixing just right!
  • A Mortar and Pestle/Mixer: To grind everything together. But honestly, if you don’t have a mortar and pestle lying around (I mean, who does??), you can use a little spoon or a makeup spatula.
  • Plastic Wrap or Wax Paper: For pressing and smoothing.

Step-by-Step Magic for Making Eyeshadow

Alright now let’s get to the fun stuff—the DIYing! You’ll be surprised how easy this really is.

1. Mix the Powders

First things first, grab your mica powder and kaolin clay. You’ll wanna mix these together real good. I usually go for more mica powder because, duh, we are here for pigment. But if you want a more subtle eyeshadow or something for an everyday base, you can adjust the ratio.

The unofficial ratio is equal parts mica and clay, but girl, experiment away and find what works best for you. This is all about making it your own!

2. Grab Your Binder

Now comes the tricky part. Add a wee bit of binder or rubbing alcohol to your powder mixture. Start slow though—I mean it, slow is better. Too much binder too fast, and you’ll have a mess. We want just enough to make a doughy texture, almost like Play-doh, but definitely don’t go overboard. You’ll know it’s right when the powder starts to clump but it’s still pliable, not runny.

3. Time to Press!

Once you’ve hit that sweet doughy spot (lol not gonna lie, that sounds like we’re making cookies 🍪), it’s time to press the shadow into your eyeshadow pan. Grab a small spoon or spatula, scoop your mixture into the pan and top with some plastic wrap or wax paper.

Now, here’s the pro tip: Press down hard! You want your shadow compacted nicely so it doesn’t break apart when you’re swooshing your eyeshadow brush in there later. If you have a coin or something similar, it works wonders for getting that firm, even press.

“Pro tip: Use a penny or a coin to press your eyeshadow perfectly flat. It fits those little pans just right!”

4. Dry It Out

Let the eyeshadow dry! Once it’s pressed neatly into the pan, let it vibe out in the open air for a few hours (or overnight if you’re feelin’ patient). The drying process basically “sets” everything.

“Don’t rush this part! Let your shadow dry completely so it doesn’t crack later.”

If you wait too short of a time, when you try to use your brand-new, badass eyeshadow, it could just flake away. And that would be a major bummer. So patience, pretty please.

5. Test Your Creation!

Now for the exciting part, grab your makeup brush and test out your custom shade! Feel free to swatch it on your arm or go ahead and layer it onto your eyelids straight away. Don’t be scared to blend it with other colors. I mean, custom shades are lowkey meant to be flexed!

Custom Color Combos You Gotta Try 🎨🎉

Now that you’re basically an at-home eyeshadow scientist, let’s talk about some color combos that’ll make your eyes POP. Why settle for a wannabe shade when you can make shades that slay?

The Bold Babe: Electric Blue + Purple Fusion

If you’re loving bold, electrifying shades like Euphoria-level drama, mix together a royal purple mica with an electric blue.

Soft E-Girl Pastels: Pink Blush + Cotton Candy

For my soft e-girls who want the ultimate pastel fantasy, try blending a dreamy baby pink with a cotton candy blue. Add a little extra shimmer for all that fairy-like cuteness.

Grunge Queen: Burnt Orange + Matte Black

Switch it up if you’re more into those 🔥grunge 🔥 vibes. Mix burnt orange mica with just a pinch of matte black clay for the ultimate ’90s “I don’t care, but do I?” look.

Sunset Sherbet: Peach + Canary Yellow

If you’re vibing more tropical or need your makeup to give “summer bb” vibes, go ahead and combine a bit of peach mica pigment with vibrant yellow. Ugh, can you imagine? Sunsets on your lids.

Why You’ll Love DIY Eyeshadow
