Eyeshadow Techniques for Different Eye Shapes

Alright, girlies! Let’s talk eyeshadow and why your eye shape totally changes the game. 🍭👀 The kicks you wear change depending on if you’re hitting the beach or going out, right? Well, same with your eye shape and how you apply eyeshadow. Let’s face it: we’re not one-size-fits-all. Some peeps have deep-set eyes, while others have hooded lids, wide eyes, or almond eyes. Whatever you’ve got going on, we’ve got to learn how to play up those unique features because eyeshadow is BOMB when it’s done right!

Before we hop into this, remember good makeup isn’t about doing what TikTok says is trending… it’s about bringing out YOUR vibe, okay? Now, go grab your brush (or your finger if we’re being real, because who has time for ALL those fancy brushes??), and let’s get into some super cool tips and tricks for YOUR eye shape! ✨💁‍♀️

Almond Eyes

Girl, if you’ve got almond eyes, the makeup gods have BLESSED you. For real! Almond eyes already have that balanced shape we’re all trying to fake with makeup; lucky you! But here’s the tea: you can still maximize that snatched look with a little clever application.

Start by sweeping a mid-tone shade into your crease, right where your brow bone and eyelid meet. This will give you some subtle dimension. Now, to really make those almond eyes pop, blend a darker shadow into the outer corner; this adds definition and drama. Put a shimmery shade on your lid to catch the light and make your eyes stand out even more, especially when the light hits just right.

Almond eyes are the universal canvas; think of it like a cat-eye that’s always on point!

NO RULES here, babes! Go for a sharp winged eyeliner to accentuate the almond’s natural lift. Then, add drama with mascara for days. Pro tip: Try tightlining! Put black eyeliner in your upper waterline, and boom; instant drama. We love drama!

Hooded Eyes

Okay, listen up: if you’ve got hooded eyes, it’s time to stop thinking of them as a struggle and instead think of them as a free reason to always have an air of mystery. Your eyelids naturally fold under, which can sometimes be a pain when trying to get all that shadow to show up. BUT I got you! The key here is to apply most of your color ABOVE your natural crease.

Start by applying a transition shade a little bit higher than you normally would, right above your actual crease! This gives the illusion of a larger lid space. Then, blend a darker matte shade into what I’ll call your fake crease (lol), sort of right above the fold. This removes any depth loss caused by your lid and gives you a fierce base to work from.

Creating a “fake crease” is LIFE for hooded eyes so you can actually see that glam shadow you worked so hard on.

Shimmery or metallic shades CAN work but avoid putting them all over ’cause the last thing you wanna do is draw attention to the areas that recede. Instead, pop your shimmer on the center of the lid or the inner corner to brighten things up.

And girl, go HEAVY on the mascara or throw on some fake lashes! It keeps your eyes open and super wide. Bonus tip: eyeliner is tricky on hooded eyes, but tightlining or a thin line close to your lashes can make a huge difference without overpowering your look.

Round Eyes

Hey there, doe-eyed stunner! If you’ve got round eyes, congrats; you’ve already got big, bold peepers (cue the model comparisons 😉). The trick for round-eye gals is to elongate those eyes a little if you’re going for that smoldering cat-eye look, aka turn the natural shape into a more almond vibe.

Start by working a soft shade from the outer third of your lower lash line to give that sultry “pulled out” look. Blend it upward, away from the crease, to exaggerate the shape. Now, for the lid itself, we’re keeping most of the shadow on the outer corner to mimic that elongated effect. Use a light shimmer shade on the first half of the lid and blend a darker shade outward and upward.

Finish with winged liner! This really helps that elongating trick and takes it to the next level.

If you want to add some instant glam to round eyes, a cat-eye = YOUR BESTIE.

PSA: Avoid putting super thick eyeliner on your top lash line unless you’re tightlining, because that’ll make your eyes look smaller. We’re giving doe-eyed baddie energy forever and always.

Monolids

Monolid babes! Y’all have the smoothest eyelids, and I’m jealous. But I know it’s tricky when the gradient that we all freak out about on TikTok doesn’t blend like you want it to. So here’s the lowdown: Layer your colors! Yep, shadows can disappear on monolids, which means you need more contrast.

Start with a primer or base to lock the colors in place. Use a neutral color all over to prep, and then go in with bolder shades ABOVE the lash line; this is key. Let those colors get darker as you go UP. This creates depth out of nothing, honey. Blend a darker shade out from the lash line upward, but don’t go too crazy near the brow because that’ll close off the eyes.

Smudged eyeliner works like magic on monolids. Smokey eyeliner and mascara will open up the eyes and add dimension we need without going into “too much” territory.

The secret with monolids? Contrast and layers, babe; load up that pigment and blend, blend, blend!

If shimmer is your thing (and HELLO, it’s mine), pop it right in the center or inner corner, and you’ll instantly draw attention to the eyes.

Deep-set Eyes

Deep-set queens, we’re gonna channel some smokey goodness for you because these eyes are made for drama. With deep-set eyes, you’ve already got a naturally deep crease, so we want to emphasize that without exaggerating the depth too much. (I mean, unless you’re going FULL-on drama, which is totally fine for your e-girl vibes.)

To bring those eyes forward, start with a light-to-medium lid color; nothing too dark in the crease, because it can just make the eyes sink. Then, use darker shades on the outer third of your eye and just above the crease. But be fun about it! Don’t let the crease overrun the lid.

One secret hero for deep-set eyes? Highlighter on your brow bone and the inner corner will open your eyes big-time.

Deep-set eyes? Light on the lid, darker shades near the outer corner = instant 🔥.

Mascara game should be STRONG. Focus it more on the outer lashes to give a lifted, sexy finish. It’s that Bambi vibes look we love without working too hard.

Close-set Eyes

If your eyes are set closer to each other, no sweat; we’ll just create the illusion they are more spaced out. The best trick for close-set eyes is to brighten the inner corners and keep the darkest shades OUTSIDE. We want to pull everything outward, you feel me?

Stick to light, bright, or sparkly tones on the inner part of your eye to really open things up. Then, keep your darker colors in the outer corners and blend out; not down! Add winged eyeliner too (there’s a reason this is a classic), starting where the lashes actually are; not from the innermost part; which will balance things out.

Splitting the inner and outer corner jobs with light on the inside, dark on the outside = mind-blowing definition!

For eyeliner, keep that party on the outer half. Same thing with mascara. Focus it on your outer lashes so they stretch out, and you’ll totally create this illusion of wider-spaced eyes.

Wide-set Eyes

For my wide-eyed beauties, the GOAL here is all about balancing the space between the eyes and bringing attention to the center of the lids. We can work wonders with shading techniques for this. First up: put darker shadows near the inner crease and blend toward the center. A soft shade on your lower lash line from the inner corner will even things out too. Keep the outer corners softer (darker shades on the outside will only emphasize the space too much).

Go easy on the wings! Instead, rock a tightline, a nice coat of inner rim black eyeliner, and top it off with mascara applied ALL over. Keep it balanced; don’t just keep your smokey effect on the outer half.

Playing up shadows near the inner corner = perfect balance for wide-set eyes.

Pop a lil highlight in the center of the lid; this will pull everything forward, making the eyes look more centered, rather than too far apart.

So there you have it! No matter what eye shape you’ve got, we’re all queens here. Slay with your brush, experiment a little, and don’t be afraid to break the rules whenever you please. There are no “makeup laws”; only makeup fun. Test-drive these tips, mix ’em up, and get creative AF because makeup is a reflection of your energy… and today? We are CHARGED UP.

Til next time, stay fierce, stay fab. 💖👑💋
