Mascara Tips for Teens: Mastering the Basics

Mascara might just be the best thing to ever happen to lashes—let’s be real, it’s the MVP of any makeup kit, especially if you’re still figuring out your makeup vibe! Whether you want that natural “I woke up like this” lash look or you’re going full glam, mascara is kinda like the secret sauce. 😏 But yo—it’s also one of those things that can go from cute to clumpy real quick if you don’t have a handle on it.

So, let’s break it down! If you’re new to mascara and want to look like the queen of lashes in the group chat, or just want to stop looking like a panda by the end of the school day, I’ve got your back with some simple, fool-proof tips.

1. Choose the right wand for your vibe 🎯

Okay, let’s talk mascara wands. You might not know this yet, but not all wands are created equal. There’s pretty much a wand for every mascara mood. Wanna separate those lashes or make them look fuller, curlier or longer? The wand is EVERYTHING.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Thick/Fluffy brushes: These give you that vol-ummmpht we all love. If you’re looking for thicker lashes, go for this one.
  • Curved brushes: Helps lift and curl those lashes. If you’ve got stubbornly straight lashes, this is your BFF.
  • Rubber combs/smaller brushes: Length for daysss. These are perf to get every single lash, especially those tiny ones in the corners of your eye.

The right mascara wand can seriously make a difference. It’s like putting a filter on your lashes—just IRL!

2. Don’t pump your mascara tube! 👀

You’ve probably seen it in movies or on social media—someone dramatically pumping the wand into the mascara tube like a maniac. Feels like something important, right? WRONG!

Pumping your mascara tube just pushes air inside and dries out the product faster. And no one wants crusty mascara, duh. Instead, twist the wand to scoop up the product and then pull it out nice and smooth. Kind of like withdrawing a sword from its sheath but, you know, way cooler.

3. Crank up that lash curl 💖

This one’s for all my straight-lash homies out there. If your lashes are like nope even after you’ve whacked 2 coats of mascara on them, you need somewhere to start first: curl those lashes.

Here’s a hack: warm up your lash curler with your hairdryer for a couple of seconds before you curl. Hold the lash curler at the base of your lashes for about 8-10 seconds. It’s going to give them so much lift and make even the cheapest mascara look AWESOME.

Warning tho! Don’t make that curler too hot—otherwise you’re straight-up frying your lashes (ouch!).

4. Wiggle it at the roots and then swipe 👉👈

Here’s a pro tip that might just change your game for-eh-verrr: don’t just slap on the product. For voluuume, place the brush at the root of your lashes and wiggle a bit before dragging it up towards the tips. This helps coat every lash evenly and stops your lashes from sticking together like they’re all besties (spoiler alert: they aren’t).

The whole wiggling thing also gives the roots some thickness while keeping the tips light, so they don’t get too weighed down.

5. Two thin coats are better than one gloopy one 😅

Unless you’re going for some wild Halloween spider-leg-lashes (which TBH, kinda slaps in the right context), don’t layer on too much mascara at once. It’s tempting because sometimes we want those extra thicc lashes, but one thick coat can make them stick together and feel heavy.

Instead, go for a thin first coat and wait a sec until it dries. Then, add a second thinner coat! Boom—now your lashes look fluffy and cute, instead of looking like they got stuck together in a storm.

6. The spoon trick to avoid smudging 🥄

Okay, this trick is a lifesaver. You ever do your whole makeup, feeling like a baddie, and then get mascara all over your eyelids when doing your lashes? Same, and it’s the worst. It’s like, why do eyelids even exist?

Pro tip: Use a spoon. Yeah, you heard me right, your mom’s dinner spoons can be your makeup hack. Place the spoon under your lower lashes or behind your top lashes when applying mascara. Any extra product goes on the spoon, not on your face. Bless. 🙏

7. Stop the smudge with translucent powder 🧚

Now, let’s talk about the mascara meltdown. I’m talking about those black streaks that show up halfway through the day, making you wonder if the day just got 10 degrees hotter or if you turned into a raccoon from a Pixar movie. No thanks.

After applying your foundation and concealer around your eyes, use a little sharp translucent powder to cover the under-eye area—this stops the mascara from smudging throughout the day. It helps absorb any oils and just keeps your makeup looking fresher.

8. Waterproof mascara? Yes, but not every day! 🌊

Waterproof mascara can be amazing because hello, no budging. Cry through a sad movie or sweat on a hot day, and that stuff’s not going anywhere. But… using it every day can be a bit harsh on the lashes. 😬

Waterproof mascaras are super drying compared to regular formulas, which means over time, it might leave your lashes looking a bit meh. If you’re a swimmer, athlete, or just dealing with crazy weather, go for it; otherwise, save waterproof for important days and stick with regular mascara the rest of the time to keep your lashes happy.

9. Mistakes? Don’t panic! Let it dry 🧘‍♀️

Oh no! You smudged it on your eyelid or cheek, didn’t you? Ugh, SO annoying…but wait, don’t freak out and grab a tissue just yet!

Let the mascara dry first. Yup, just wait a sec. Trying to wipe wet mascara will just smudge it more. Once it’s dry, simply use a cotton swab and gently flick away the mistake. No harm, no foul!

10. Remove every last bit at the end of the day! 🌙

Okay babe, so you’ve slayed the mascara game all day—don’t wreck it by falling asleep without removing it! 🤦‍♀️ I know it’s tempting to crash straight into bed, but caked-up mascara can mess with your lashes and lead to breakage. Nooo thank you.

Use an eye-friendly makeup remover, or even better, an oil-based one that literally melts mascara off. Swipe it away carefully from the roots to tips, and say goodnight to your gorgeous makeup. 😴

Taking off mascara at the end of the day = showing your lashes some well-deserved love!

11. Don’t forget to replace your mascara! ⏳

Oh man, this one’s IMPORTANT. If your mascara is older than 3 months, it’s probably time to toss it (yeah, seriously). Bacteria can build up after a while, and the last thing we want is an eye infection from ancient mascara. Scary, but true.

PLUS, old mascara is just clumpy and smells kinda weird sometimes. So save yourself the struggle, and get a fresh tube every few months for your safety—and for those flawless lashes!

12. Curl after mascara? Nope! 😑

It might sound like a good idea to curl your lashes after putting on mascara for that extra boost, but don’t do it. Once mascara is dry, your lashes are less flexible, and curling them could cause breakage. You don’t wanna end up with short, broken lashes, trust me. It’s like death by curler.

Stick to curling before mascara for the healthiest and most natural lift.
