Concealer Application Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Okay, let’s get real about concealer…
Concealer is basically one of those makeup products we swear by, but guess what? So many of us are guilty of misapplying it. 🙈 Whether you’re new to makeup or have been playing around with it for years, there’s a solid chance you’ve committed a concealer crime (yep, I’ve been there too). But no worries—no one’s about to call makeup jail. We’re going to break down common concealer mistakes AND how you can fix them. So grab your cute little beauty blender, and get ready for some flawless tips, bestie!
Mistake #1: Going Wayyy Too Light With Concealer
So you’ve seen all those celebs with their super highlighted under-eyes, right? Totally serves that snatched look we all crave. But here’s the T: If your concealer looks hella white under your eyes, you didn’t choose the right shade.
Instead of getting that flawless, lit-from-within glow, you might end up looking like you’ve been flash-frozen in headlights. The lighter concealer trick works, but only if you grab something that’s one or maybe two shades lighter than your skin tone—no more than that!
Fix it:
1. Get yo’self color-matched! Your ideal concealer shade for brightness will be a tiny bit lighter than your foundation.
2. If you already bought that super light concealer—it’s okay! You can mix it with a darker shade or blend it out realllly well to make it less stark. I call it the “concealer cocktail trick.”
The perfect concealer shade can be just like Goldilocks finding her bed—not too dark and not too light, just right!
Mistake #2: Caking It On Like It’s Frosting
Okay, I know it’s tempting, especially if you’ve got acne scars or dark circles, but layering thick blobs of concealer on your skin won’t magically vanish imperfections. I promise! Instead, it’s just going to crack, settle, and basically give you that not-so-cute cakey look. (Oh noooo…)
Too much concealer = emphasizing the stuff you’re trying to cover up.
Fix it:
1. Focus on less product, more blending. Honestly, you probably need WAY less concealer than you think. Dab, blend, step back, and see if you need more before going HAM.
2. Use a damp sponge or beauty blender. It helps blend seamlessly and removes any extra product!
3. Set areas where you tend to crease with light powder, but don’t overdo it.
“Less is more” is seriously the motto here, babes. Trust me, don’t be that cake-faced girl! 🎂 (Cake is for parties, not faces.)
Mistake #3: Putting It ALL Over Your Face
Unless it’s acting as your foundation (which, btw, is totally a move), concealer is meant for specific spots like dark circles, pimples, or where you need a little extra pop. Using it all over can make your base feel heavy and look patchy. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT slather concealer on like sunscreen. 💀
Fix it:
1. Spot treat!! Only use concealer where you have blemishes, hyperpigmentation, or redness. For bigger patches, like redness around your nose or mouth, try using a color corrector to help out your concealer if needed.
2. If you’re using concealer as foundation, make sure it’s the right formula for that purpose. Some concealers work for all-over coverage, but most are just for targeted applications.
Your foundation is the real MVP for all-over coverage. Concealer’s more of a touch-up queen!
Mistake #4: Not Setting It Properly (Or At All!)
Let’s be honest—if you ever wondered why your concealer seems to slide off your face halfway through the day, it’s probably because you didn’t set it correctly. Oh, and don’t get me started on under-eye creases! Like, why do we even have creases there in the first place?
So if your concealer loves to move or settle into fine lines, you need to give it a little backup squad (aka powder).
Fix it:
1. After applying concealer, immediately tap some translucent or banana powder over it. Use a small fluffy brush for under-eye areas, and for your face, well…just dust lightly.
2. If you want to be extra (…which is totally me), try the baking method. Press a good amount of powder under your eyes, leave it for 5-10 minutes, and brush it away. Clean and creaseless!
3. Don’t rush! Let your concealer set naturally for a few seconds before you jump in with powder.
Lock that concealer in place, so it doesn’t move around like your ex when things get serious. 😂
Mistake #5: Overlooking Color Correctors
Okay…when you’re dealing with dark circles (especially purplish-blue under your eyes), slapping on a regular concealer alone won’t cut it. Skip the color corrector and your concealer can end up looking kinda grey or ashy (yikes). Imagine balancing your undertones first.
Fix it:
1. If you’re battling bluish or purple under-eyes, go for a peachy or orange color corrector, depending on your skin tone. Peach works for lighter skin tones, while deeper orange suits darker skin tones.
2. Green color corrector is perf for red pimples or acne scars, FYI. 💚
3. ALWAYS apply the color corrector before layering on concealer, then blend it out super carefully!
4. Don’t go overboard with the corrector (a little dab will do ya). And again—blend, blend, blend!
Here’s a cool little Color Corrector Cheat Sheet cause I’ve totally been in that color-confusion zone myself:
| Color of Issue | Corrector Shade |
|---|---|
| Blue/Purple (under eyes) | Peach or Orange |
| Redness (blemishes) | Green |
| Dullness (generally) | Lavender |
Isn’t it amazing what a bit of color theory can do?! 🎨 You’re basically an artist now.
Mistake #6: Using The Wrong Formula For Your Skin Type
Not all concealers are created equal. If you’re using a thick, dry formula under your eyes when you’ve got dry skin, it’s going to look cakey and kinda crusty. If you’re oily and you’ve got a hydrating concealer in heatwave weather, it’s gonna melt faster than ice cream. 🌞🍦
Fix it:
1. If your skin is dry, opt for a hydrating concealer that won’t cling to dry patches. Creamier formulas will be your ride-or-die.
2. If you’ve got oily skin, steer clear from high-moisture formulas. Stick with mattifying or long-wear products that won’t slide off.
3. Combo skin? Mix and match LOL. Use a hydrating concealer under the eyes and a matte one on acne/scars!
Match your concealer formula with your skin type like you’re swiping right on a new boo—it HAS to be a good fit!
Mistake #7: Applying Directly On Dry Skin
Sometimes after washing your face (or if you’ve got naturally dry skin), your skin feels tight and thirsty. And then layering concealer on top? Yikes. That’s just going to emphasize dry flakes and make everything look patchy AF. You’ve gotta give your skin some love first, babe.
Fix it:
1. Moisturize your skin! Especially under the eyes—a light eye cream goes a long way.
2. Add a primer under your eyes and on top of blemishes. Primers will smooth out dry patches and create a better base for your concealer.
3. Avoid powder foundations if you’re dealing with dryness. Stick to liquid formulas that sit comfortably on your skin.
Hydrate your skin first! Dry skin magnifies every little issue. Give it some love before piling on concealer.
Mistake #8: Forgetting About Your Undertone
You know how some people buy foundation or concealer that looks great in the bottle but ends up looking ashy or too yellow on their face? That’s because they didn’t consider their undertone. It’s suuuuuper important to match your concealer’s undertone with your skin’s undertone, especially if you want a seamless, non-ashy finish.
Fix it:
1. Know your undertone! Are you warm, cool, or neutral? Most of the time cool tones work best with pink-based formulas, while warm tones jive with yellow-based concealers. Pretty simple!
2. Swatch the concealer on your face, not your hand. Trust me—your hand may be a totally different ballpark in skin tone.
Knowing your undertone’s like unlocking the secret to perfect makeup matching. Don’t skip it!
Honestly, there’s a ton of different ways your concealer game can slip up, but once you figure out these common slips, you’ll be SHINING. ✨ Concealer is meant to work with your skin, not against it—it’s like your bestie that helps you out when you just need to cover that pimple or brighten after a Netflix binge that went too late (been there!).
