How to Choose Concealer: A Guide for Beginners

Alright my beautiful babes! Let’s be real for a sec: concealer is basically the behind-the-scenes superhero of makeup. You don’t see it, but it does ALL the work. Got a sudden zit? BOOM, it’s gone. Late night binge-watching Netflix, and now you’ve got zombie under-eyes? Bam, concealer’s got your back. But, picking the right one? 💀 It’s like finding a seat in a crowded cafeteria on pizza day—super confusing.

But don’t sweat it! I’m about to drop knowledge on you like we’re sitting in my room, playing around with makeup. By the time we’re done, you’ll be walking into Sephora like, “I got this.” 😎

Step 1: Know What You Need Concealer For

Okay, first things first: why do you want concealer? Are we talking undereye circles, pimples, scars, or just that “I woke up like this” look? Before you throw a tube in your online cart, you’ve got to figure out what you’re using it for.

Here’s the vibe:

  • Undereye Circles: Look tired but don’t wanna show it? You need a concealer that’s creamy and radiant. Something that’ll brighten and add that ✨ wakey-wakey✨ look!
  • Pimples/Acne Scars: For spots, you need something thicker with more coverage. But it shouldn’t look like you’re caking on makeup. Ew. You want it to cover the zits without making you feel like you’re wearing a layer of drywall.
  • Rednessyellow/greenish color-correcting concealerGreen tones cancel out redness—it’s like magic but for your face.

If you’re trying to cover pimples with a brightening formula, girl, it might go south 😬

Step 2: Shades Baby, SHADES 🖌️

If there’s one makeup mistake that we’ve all been guilty of at least once, it’s wearing a concealer like 5 shades too light. Who else remembers when that stark white triangle under the eyes was THE look? 😅 It seems cute at first, but yikes baby, we’ve moved on from that era.

So here’s a good rule of thumb:

  • For under eyes: 1 to 2 shades lighter than your foundation. Just enough to brighten, but not make you look like you’re trying out the Casper-the-Ghost life.
  • For acne spots and blemishes: Match it exactly to your foundation. You want that stuff to disappear completely, not stand out. So nope, lighter is NOT the way!

Reminder: blending is your new BFF. If your concealer doesn’t blend, it’s time to rethink your shade. 💁‍♀️

Pro-tip: If you’re getting confused about undertones, here’s the DL. Check out your veins on your wrist. If they look green, you’re warm-toned (golden/peachy shades), and if they look blue-ish, you’re cool-toned (pink/neutral). Neutral-toned beauties? You can play with either side like it’s no biggie.

Step 3: Cream? Liquid? Stick? 🤔

Alright, so this is the one thing that just confuses everybody at first. There are SO MANY different types of concealers. I mean, what’s the difference between a stick and a liquid? Why should you care? Well babe, each type does different things for different skin types and what you’re trying to “conceal”.

Let’s break it downnn:

Liquid Concealer

Liquid concealer is like an all-rounder. Think of it like that superhero sidekick who’s good at everything.

  • Best for: Most skin types. Oily, combo, normal—you’re safe here.
  • Advantages: Great for buildable coverage. You can go light if you want or layer that bad boy if you need more coverage. Triple threat.
  • Downside: It can crease under da eyes if you’re using waaaay too much or skipping setting powder.

HOW TO SLAY:

Use a tiny concealer brush (or your fingers if you’re chill with it) and pat, pat, pat until it melts into your skin. Do NOT swipe, or it’ll just move the concealer around, and we don’t want streaks, do we?

Cream Concealer

Cream concealer is a little thicker—it’s basically like a boyfriend hoodie for your face. It covers everything and makes you feel cozy (but like, fab).

  • Best for: Dry skin because it’s more hydrating but oily girlies can still use this for that thick coverage on the good ol’ spots.
  • Advantages: Full coverage, baby. Blemishes or dark circles? Byeeeeeee.
  • Downside: Can look cake-y if you overdo it. Your skin isn’t a frosting situation.

Stick Concealer

Stick concealers are like markers. You literally just draw on your face, and listen, it legit feels like arts and crafts—except it’s on your skin, and like, way cooler.

  • Best for: Normal, dry skin, but oily skin—hard pass. (It can slide off).
  • Advantages: Super easy to use when you’re on-the-go. No brush needed! Just blend out with fingers, and you’re rolling.
  • Downside: It’s thick, so meh for under eyes unless you’re going for that high fashion raccoon vibe.

Step 4: Concealer for Different Skin Types 🌈

We’ve gotta chat skin type, because picking the right concealer also depends on what kinda face you’re workin’ with. Whether you’re team oily, team dry, or team combo, there’s something out there for ALL of us.

  • Oily Skin: You need a concealer that says, “Stay. Put.”. Look for a matte or oil-free formula that helps with shine. Also, setting powder will be your absolute bestie.
  • Dry Skin: Hydration is key, babe! Anything cream-based is gonna make your skin look flawless AND keep the dry spots at bay. Avoid anything too matte or drying–that’s just setting yourself up for flaky disaster.
  • Combination Skin: You’ve got the best of both : oily and dry! Fun times right?! For this, you’ve got to target different parts of your face with different products. Try a cream or hydrating concealer under your eyes, and a matte or long-wear formula for your T-zone (aka shiny spots). 👏👏

Step 5: How to Apply Concealer Like a Total BOSS

Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: Application! You probably already know there’s a RIGHT and a WRONG way. Slapping it on and running out the door? Meh. Giving your concealer the love she deserves? YES girl—that’s when the magic happens.

Here’s a chill method that WORKS.

For under eyes:

  • Start with a small dot under your eye, closer to your lash line. NOT that dramatic V-shape anymore, please. 😅
  • Grab your fave blending tool (my personal fave is a moist beauty sponge), and use a light tapping motion to buff it out.
  • Set it with a loose setting powder right away to lock it in so it doesn’t end up in your creases like a bad breakup text.

For pimples:

  • Don’t glob the concealer directly onto your zit (we’ve all done it lol, but let’s not!)
  • Instead, use a brush to dab the concealer on top of the pimple. After that tap around the sides to blend in with the surrounding skin but avoid spreading it all over your face.
  • Set with powder if you notice shine creeping in.

Use a beauty sponge to blend, not your fingers. You’ll get way more control and fewer streaks.

Finally, Don’t Forget to Set It 👏🏼

I can’t say this enough. After all that effort, the last thing you wanna do is have your look slide off by lunchtime. Girl, setting is KEY. I repeat—setting is the difference between “all-day flawless” and “where did my concealer go??”. After applying, use a translucent setting powder, especially for under eyes and blemishes.

A light tapping with a fluffy brush gets the job done. Pro tip: don’t overdo it though, or you’ll look cakey AF. You want to look set, not like someone just dropped flour on your face.

And there you have it babes—conquer your concealer game, and you are SET to show up looking fab, fresh, and face-forward 😘. Seriously, now that you know the deal, there’s zero reason for raccoon eyes, patchy pimples, or makeup regret.

Your concealer hunt just got way easier, right?! Now go grab that selfie light and let the world see your flawless face!
