Hair Care Tips

How to Care For 4C Hair?

You guys, let’s go ahead and say it: 4C hair is a whole personality. She’s bold, beautiful, has hella shrinkage and doesn’t care what society thinks. But babyyyy… taking care of her? That’s where things get real. If you’ve been struggling to keep your 4C curls hydrated, detangled, and just straight up alive, pull up a chair because this post is your new BFF.

I’m Su, your makeup-loving, SoCal-living homegirl who’s obsessed with fluffy fros, laid edges, and making products work as hard as you do. Whether you’re rocking your natural coils 24/7 or switching between wigs and wash-and-gos, taking care of 4C hair doesn’t have to be drama. It just needs some love, patience, and let’s be honest ;  the right products. Trust me: once you get into a rhythm, your hair starts vibing with you sooo hard.

So grab your wide-tooth comb, a satin bonnet, and maybe a green juice (because we’re cute and hydrated), and let’s get into this.

What Is 4C Hair Anyway?

Alright, super quick breakdown for those of us who blacked out during hair typing class. 4C is the tightest curl pattern in the hair typing system. It’s characterized by dense, springy texture, Z-shaped coils, and yes ;  major shrinkage. Like, your hair could be shoulder length and still look like a lil’ puffball. That’s 4C magic.

But because it’s got tons of bends and folds, natural oils from your scalp have a hard time traveling down the hair shaft. That’s why 4C hair gets dry SO fast and why moisture is literally the theme of our lives.

4C hair doesn’t like to be rushed ;  it demands attention, hydration, and chill vibes only

Moisture Is Your Mantra

If you take one thing from this whole post, let it be this: water is not your enemy. In fact, it’s your hair’s bestie.

4C curls crave moisture like we crave hot Cheetos on a Friday night. And the trick is actually getting that hydration to stay in our strands.

The LOC or LCO Method (aka the Glow Up Combo)

We love a good acronym. And LOC or LCO is everything. They stand for:

Method Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
LOC Liquid (water or leave-in) Oil Cream
LCO Liquid (water or leave-in) Cream Oil

Try both and see what your hair likes better. I personally stan LCO because sealing everything in with oil just hits better. Use a leave-in conditioner that defines curls and a cream that softens without being greasy. For oils, jojoba, argan, or good old coconut always do the job.

Wash Day Vibes

Let’s talk wash day. Now, wash day can feel like a whole situation, but it doesn’t have to suck, I swear. With the right flow, you can make it less “ugh” and more “spa day but for your scalp.”

How Often Should You Wash?

Look, there’s no hair police. But for most 4C queens, washing once a week or every 10 days is a sweet spot. Washing too often can strip your hair of the little moisture it has. But waiting too long? That’s how you get buildup, itchy scalp, and hair that starts acting up.

During your wash day, make it feel like a mini treat instead of a chore. Light a candle, put your fav playlist on (hello Beyoncé Renaissance), and turn that bathroom into your personal salon.

Pick the Right Shampoo

Please. Stop. Using. Stripping. Shampoos.

Get a sulfate-free shampoo that cleans without leaving your hair dry AF. Or if your scalp isn’t super gunky, try a co-wash (cleansing conditioner) to gently cleanse without sucking your strands dry. I love As I Am Coconut Cowash or Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleanser for this.

Detangling Without the Drama

If you’ve ever cried mid-detangle session, same. 4C knots can go from cute to chaos real quick. But you can outsmart them.

Detangle on Wet Hair

Never, and I mean NEVER, detangle your curls when they’re dry. It’s like asking for breakage. Always apply a solid leave-in or even just water to soften the strands before going in.

Use:

  • A wide-tooth comb (bless this tool)
  • A detangling brush like the Tangle Teezer Thick & Curly
  • Or your fingers if you’ve got the patience of a saint

Start from the ends and work your way up. Your ends are the most fragile and will literally snap off if you go in too aggressively.

Protective Styles = Hair Growth’s BFF

Braids, twists, wigs, and buns? Yes please. These styles protect your ends, give your scalp a break, and help with length retention.

But protective styles don’t mean neglect. If you’ve got braids, still moisturize your scalp every few days. Hit your roots with a leave-in spray or light oil and massage it in. Your hair’s still alive under there, babe.

And do NOT leave styles in forever. Two to six weeks is your window. Leave them longer and you’re asking for matting, buildup, and angry edges.

Your hair doesn’t grow just because it’s braided ;  it grows because you’re taking care of it while it’s protected

Sleep, but Make It Satin

Real talk: if you’re not sleeping on satin or silk yet, what are you doing?

Cotton pillowcases suck moisture from your hair like an emotional vampire. That friction leads to breakage, dryness, and sad, frizzy curls when you wake up. Save yourself the stress and invest in a satin bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase. Your hair will thank you.

Trimming: Not the Enemy

I know, I know. You grow all this length and now I’m telling you to cut it?

Listen though. Keeping your ends trimmed is how you prevent split ends from trashing your progress. If your ends look frizzy, feel rough, or tangle more than usual, it might be time for a trim. Every 3 to 4 months is usually a safe bet.

And if you don’t trust yourself with scissors, hit up a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair without leaving you looking like a chopped broom.

Scalp Care Is Self Care

We’re so focused on curls sometimes that we forget the thing they grow out of: your scalp.

Keep it clean but not squeaky. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to kick buildup to the curb. And if your scalp is feeling dry or flaky, throw in some oils like tea tree, peppermint, or castor oil.

Bonus tip: Do scalp massages. Like, for real. They improve blood flow and promote growth and it feels freaking amazing. So… scalp massage during Netflix? Goals.

Hair health starts at the root ;  literally

Snack Time: Feed Your Hair from the Inside

Okay this one sounds boring at first but hear me out. Your hair is lowkey petty. If you’re eating garbage, she’s gonna let you know.

Drink water like you mean it. Eat foods with iron, protein, and omega-3s. Biotin-rich snacks like eggs, nuts, and spinach? Chef’s kiss. You don’t have to live on kale and sadness, just fuel your body with real stuff and your hair flourishes.

Favorite Products I’m Obsessing Over Right Now

Okay this is where I drop the tea on products that actually work on 4C hair ;  no cap.

  • Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk: Literally a hug in a bottle for dry hair
  • Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil: Holy grail for scalp massages and length retention
  • TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask: Self-care in a jar. Leaves your curls soft AF.
  • SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie: Been loving this since high school. Still slaps.
  • Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In: Slips like butter. Period.

Slide your favorite into your routine and see what clicks. Sometimes it takes a little mix and match till you get it right.

Final Thoughts From Your Curl-Obsessed Makeup Bestie

Caring for 4C hair isn’t about trying to “fix” anything. Your curls are already perfect ;  they just wanna thrive. And sis, they will thrive once you listen to them, give them moisture, protect their peace (and their ends), and treat them like royalty.

So whether your hair is out in all its kinky glory or tucked under a sleek middle-part wig, remember: every kink, coil, and curl tells a story. And she’s a baddie.

Keep slaying, keep moisturizing, and let’s all promise to stop ripping through our hair with a brush ever again, okay?

Let me know in the comments what your go-to 4C routine looks like and if you’ve got any product recs I NEED to try!
