Hair Care Tips

How to Take Care Of High Porosity Hair?

Oh, girl. Let me guess—you’ve got high porosity hair and it’s driving you nuts, right? I feel you. It can be a legit struggle, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not as tragic as it seems (dramatic, I know, but stay with me). High porosity hair just needs a bit more TLC to keep it happy and healthy, and I’ve got allllll the tips to help you take care of it like a pro. So, let’s get into it.💁‍♀️

First of all, if you’re sitting here like, “Suu, what does high porosity even mean?” Don’t worry, I got you, boo. High porosity hair basically means your hair is like really thirsty. It soaks up moisture quickly because the cuticles (the outer layer of hair) are more open. Sounds kinda great, right? Nope. The sketchy part is that all that moisture leaves just as fast as it came in. It’s pretty much like when you try to hydrate by chugging a bottle of water, but you’re still thirsty five minutes later. Annoying!

What Causes High Porosity Hair?

A bunch of things can cause this, and lemme give you the tea🍵:

  1. Heat Styling: Flat irons, curling wands, blow-dryers (I’m lookin’ at you, heat addicts). Using high heat on your hair too much can weaken your cuticles, leaving them open and your hair vulnerable.
  2. Chemical Treatments: Bleaching, perms, relaxers, dyeing—anything that messes with your hair texture can lead to high porosity.
  3. Environmental Damage: UV rays, pollution, super cold weather, or even salty ocean water—if you’re outdoorsy (I guess someone’s gotta be), these factors can damage your hair just as much!

If your hair tends to soak up water super quickly but feels dry right after, there’s a good chance you’ve got high porosity hair.

Now the good news: high porosity hair doesn’t mean you’re cursed forever. You just need a lil’ strategy… Here comes the GLOW UP section!✨

Moisture is Your New BFF 🌊

Literally, hydration is everything. Remember that high porosity hair sucks up all the moisture, but it needs locks (and not, like, your hair kind of locks—like, locks to hold in that moisture). Here’s how you can show your thirsty hair some love:

1. Deep Conditioning Mask

Deep conditioning masks are like face masks for your hair—just as essential for giving it that boost! I swear by SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein Power TreatmentYogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein Power Treatment. This stuff provides the intense moisture and protein boost your hair is crying for.

Do this like once a week, and after a few weeks, girl, you will see a difference. Your hair will thank you!

2. The Holy Grail: Leave-In Conditioner

Ohhhh, leave-in conditioner! High porosity hair can’t just eat moisture once and be done; it needs a snack, too. Grab a leave-in to help keep that moisture locked. Some cool options you can try are the Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream or the Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave In. (If you know, you know 💅.) You can throw this on right after you get out of the shower on damp hair before styling it.

Pro Tip: Consider switching to a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt to dry your hair after washing. Regular towels can pull moisture out of your hair and cause frizz. No thanks!

Sealing Oils: The Final Step to Deep Moisture 💦

So, we’ve moisturized…but HOLD UP—we’re not done yet. One thing that high porosity hair is suuuper into is being sealed. That’s where oils come in. Think of it like locking the front door after you finally finish tidying up your house (ugh, we feel accomplished). You don’t want all that moisturizing work to just escape, right? Hair oils form a barrier that keeps the hydration inside where it belongs.

Some of my top picks for oils:

Jamaican Black Castor Oil: Thick and perfect for sealing moisture into every strand.
Argan Oil: Lightweight and gives the hair a shiny, frizz-free look.
Coconut Oil: A classic for good reason (smells awesome too).

Just make sure you apply it to your still-damp hair, focusing on the ends, which are usually the most damaged. A little goes a long way though—don’t drench your head in oil or you’ll end up looking greasy. And trust me, greasy isn’t chic!

Lock in that moisture like it’s your last slice of pizza—don’t let anyone (or anything) steal it away!

Protein Treatments: Your Hair’s Muscle Builder 💪

I can already hear you asking—“Suuu, why do I need protein though?!” Well, girl, protein helps strengthen your hair from damage. It’s like when you hit the gym and lift weights; your hair also needs a solid workout to toughen up. Protein treatments fill in the gaps in your cuticles, making your hair stronger, healthier, and more resilient. But listen up!! Too much protein can make your hair brittle, so don’t go crazy.

Once or twice a month, use a protein-based product. The Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment is loved by like…everyone for a reason. It’s kind of intense but works wonders if your hair is feeling hella weak and breaky.

Warning: Don’t do protein treatments too often. Your hair will get all stiff like a board, and we don’t want that drama. Space it out with your moisture routine.

Say Nooo to Harsh Sulfates 🧴 🚫

High porosity hair is already having a hard time hanging onto moisture, so harsh shampoos just make it worse. Stay far away from sulfates (which are in many shampoos and create suds). They’re gonna strip your hair and leave it feeling crispy and sad. We do NOT want crispy hair, ok? Choose a sulfate-free shampoo instead… something like Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate Shea Butter Shampoo. It’ll clean that scalp and hair gently without making it an SOS situation.

And if you really want extra love, try co-washing (cleansing with conditioner instead of using shampoo) every other wash. It keeps the natural oils in your hair happy while still cleaning out the buildup. This is like grabbing two slices of pizza and calling it dinner. You can both cleanse and hydrate!

The Silk Pillowcase Vibe 💋💖

You might not even think about this one—but honestly, switching to a silk or satin pillowcase is a game-changer. Cotton pillowcases can rub against your hair, causing breakage, tangles, and drawing out all that moisture you’ve worked so hard to put in. Bad juju! Silk pillowcases, tho? SUPER luxurious, helps reduce friction, and maintains your hair’s moisture overnight. Yasss, queen. We love waking up to soft, healthy hair!

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase feels like resting on a cloud—and your hair will start to glow up, too!

Heat? Ha, Maybe Not Today Sis 🔥

Okay—this one kinda sucks, but it’s gotta be said: high porosity hair struggles with retaining moisture and integrity because it already has damage. And guess what adds more damage? You guessed it, HEAT. So, it’s really best to skip the flat iron or blow-dryer as much as you can.

But if you absolutely HAVE to use heat (some days, we all do), do NOT forget a heat protectant. I’m obsessed with CHI’s 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray. It’s like a shield for your strands when you’re using hot tools. Spray that ish on before any heat touches your hair.

Quick Recap:

So how do you keep your high porosity hair poppin’? Follow the basics:

Step Why You Need It
