How to Style Men’S Curly Hair?

Curly hair struggles, AM I RIGHT?! Like, whether we’re talking about spirals or waves—our curly-haired dudes out there know what it’s like. It’s stunning but also a handful, like when your fave celeb looks effortlessly bomb, and you try to do the same thing, but end up looking like you’ve spent a windy day at the beach. Yeah, so we’re here to make that curly hair journey smoother because we can’t have you out here with the unplanned frizz ruining your day. 🙄

Step 1: Get the Right Cut

First off, guys, not all barbers understand curls. That’s the REAL tea. You can’t just go to any ol’ spot expecting them to handle your curls the way they’d handle straight hair. Nah. Curly hair needs love and skill. If you haven’t found a barber that gets it, FIND ONE. Look for a barber that understands texture and knows how to cut to enhance those curls. Instead of doing something drastic on the top with an undercut because it’s “on-trend”, figure out how your hair naturally falls and works with that.

Also, a pro tip: Avoid thinning out your curls too much; you’ll end up looking like you just had a fight with a lawnmower. 😬

“Your haircut can make or break your curly game!”

Step 2: Use the Right Shampoo & Conditioner (No Sulfates Plz 🙅‍♀️)

OK, there’s this thing called sulfate, and it’s in most classic shampoos. Sulfates strip the hair of its natural oils, and for curly-haired boys, those natural oils are like GOLD. Don’t wash with products that have sulfates or your hair is gonna look like a shrub that missed water day. 💦 Instead, go for:

  • Sulfate-free shampoos: Protects your hair’s moisture
  • Conditioner: This should be your bestie. Conditions curls and brings down the frizz-prone life

Also: try not to shampoo daily! Think more like 2-3 times a week. Over-washing gets rid of natural oils that are crucial for curls to stay hydrated. Curls thrive on moisture. Let it live the life it deserves!

Here’s something to remember: hydrated hair is a happy hair. Keep it soft!

Clean hair is great, but curls need hydration to look their best!

Step 3: Drying…DO NOT Aggressively Towel Dry 🚫

Trust me, most guys with curly hair mess everything up when they try drying their hair like they would straight hair. Don’t towel dry (at least not aggressively). Pat it dry GENTLY or use a t-shirt. Yup, a random clean t-shirt sitting in your gym bag can level up the softness of your curls. It’s science (probably).

If you’re a bit more on the fancy side, think about using a microfiber towel. These bad boys work magic without all the frizz. 🙌

Also, please—avoid that hairdryer unless you’ve mastered the diffuser attachment. It adds volume without making you look like you stuck your head in a wind tunnel. 🌬️

Step 4: Styling Products—Curl Creams, Gels, Mousse…the Squad You Need

Alright, now that your hair’s washed, dried, and semi-tamed…enter the styling products. If you’ve been skipping this part, I’m respectfully telling you that you’re doing it alllll wrong, fam.

Curl Cream

Curl cream has a universe of wisdom to offer when it comes to definition. It gives you soft, touchable curls and helps keep them defined without making you look like you’ve dumped a bucket of oil on your head. The best method? Apply it when your hair’s still damp, starting at the ends and working your way up.

Gel

If you’re into sleek, polished curls, this might be your savior. The thing with gel is you have to find the right one; some are kinder and don’t get all crunchy. And if your curls are soft and defined but you also want to make sure they last ALL DAY, gel is essential for longevity.

Mousse

This is basically the meeting point between curl cream and gel; it says, “Hey, wanna add volume and bounce but without stiffness? Me tooooo!”

Use mousse if: you wanna get that nice beachy volume/smoothed out curl effect. Apply to damp hair, scrunch a bit, and let that air-dry—bam, curls for days.

Add some lightweight shine spray afterward if you’re feelin’ fancy. ✨💁

Step 5: Find Your Curl Shape

Curly hair has a mind of its own. Some days you’ll be wearing looser waves, others you’ll find tight spirals popping out of nowhere. The key to mastering curly hair is finding YOUR specific curl pattern.

How, you ask? Limit the heat damage, find your product routine, and let those bad boys flourish. Curls are happiest when they’re left to do their thing with some encouragement from (ahem) the right products. If your curls won’t behave, it’s probably asking for something: either hydration, definition, or basically any product you’re neglecting. 🤷‍♀️

Step 6: Embrace the Scrunch Way of Life

Whatchu thought? Scrunching isn’t just something us girls talk about on curly hair TikTok. If you have curly hair, SCRUNCHING IS LIFE. Like, honestly, if you’re not scrunching, you’re just playing hard mode with your curls when you didn’t have to. As you apply product, lean in and scrunch the ends of your hair upward. It breaks the crunch and defines your curls.

And if you wanna go extra: do it upside down. Bonus volume, dude. 💥 It’s one of the best things for making curls POP!

“Scrunch like your curls depend on it. Because they do.”

Step 7: Frizz Control—The Never-ending Battle

Let’s address the frizz because…hello, California foggy mornings? 😳 It’s a war zone out here. The good news? Most of the frizz problem comes from dryness. So, step 1: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate that hair like it’s your cactus friend that hasn’t seen water in weeks! You can toss some leave-in conditioner into your morning routine or carry a frizz serum.

Less touching also = less frizz. Seriously. Finger comb it when styling, but try not to keep tampering with it throughout the day like it’s a fidget spinner.

If you’re traveling or going somewhere humid, pay special attention to balance out moisture and lock it in with a lightweight curl spray. Also (this one’s fuego), swap your pillowcase for a satin or silk one. I’m not joking. Not only does your hair glide more smoothly, it’ll wake up calmer too. 🌙

Step 8: Buns, Pineapples, and Protective Styles 🥥

Let’s not forget that curly hair needs rest days too. And NOOOO-it doesn’t mean just leaving it as is, and ordering DoorDash all day, okay?! Try pulling your curls into loose buns or top knot situations, aka the “Pineapple Method,” which involves putting your hair into a high, loose ponytail before bed to avoid squishing the curls.

This also means laying off the heat tools for styling. We love a good flat iron for the occasion, but CONSTANT use will flatline your curls’ health over time.

That being said—interested in playing with protective styling? Mess with some styles like twists (super easy), braids, or man-buns. 🍍

Final Thoughts on Loving Curly Hair 💙

Curly hair on guys is like the best thing ever, but it requires some love and care, y’know? Going for a vibe that makes your curls pop while keeping the messy, effortless energy we’re all after can happen, trust the process. Your curls can be iconic if you show up and treat them right with solid products, dope cuts, and minimal frizz drama.

So—what are you waiting for? Show those curls the love they deserve. Your future self with perfect curls will thank you!
