How to Wash Wigs Human Hair?

Hey gorgeous! Soooo, you’ve got that fabulous human hair wig, huh? Yaaas queen! 🙌 But now you’re probably thinking, “How the heck do I wash this thing so it stays looking fresh and slay-worthy?”

Don’t stress—I got you! Washing human hair wigs might sound intimidating but it’s actually super easy with the right method. And, trust me, your wig will be soft, shiny, and ready to snap for your next selfie.

Okay, let’s get into this. Grab a chai latte or an iced coffee for this one—it’s gonna be like a fun lil’ spa day, but for your wig!

Step 1: Detangle, babe—gently! 🖤

Before you even touch that water, we gotta do a lil prep. Think of it as a pre-glam warm-up. You want to detangle your wig while it’s still dry, cause if you try it when it’s wet—yikes! Goodbye, perfect strands. 😬

Here’s your game plan:

  1. Start with a super gentle detangling brush or a wide-tooth comb. You’ll want to begin at the ends of the wig first. Why? If you start at the roots, you’re risking some serious knot-up and breakage. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
  2. Work your way up to the top of the wig. Be gentle, like you’re detangling your own hair. You wouldn’t go yanking on your head… right? Treat your wig with that same love.
  3. Tangles? Hands OFF that brush if it’s gnarly. Instead, spray a lil’ wig detangler or some leave-in conditioner on those bad boys and work them out slowly. Patience, babe, patience.

Tangle trouble? Slay them with love, not with force!

Step 2: Time to get our hands wet—wash it right! 🧼

Okay, let’s make it rain! But like, in the soft, wig-friendly way—not a waterfall of drama.

Here’s what you’re gonna do:

  1. Fill up your sink or a bowl with cold or lukewarm water. Don’t use hot water unless you’re trying to ruin your wig and have zero chill. (Spoiler: you totally are NOT tryna ruin it.)
  2. Add a TINY amount of sulfate-free shampoo. And no, not the same stuff you use on your own hair (unless it’s sulfate-free). Sulfates are super drying and wigs crave hydration. Keep that wig quenched, my friend! Wig-specific shampoo is your safest bet, but if you don’t have that—go for an ultra-moisturizing shampoo.
  3. Gently dunk the wig into the water, swirling it around like you’re letting it have its little spa day moment. But DO NOT scrub the wig or rub it harshly!! You can’t treat your wig like a pair of dirty sneakers, girl.

  4. After about 3-5 minutes, pull the wig outta the water. Lightly press the excess water OUT with your hands. Again, emphasis on “lightly”. It’s a wig, not ice cream—don’t twist and wring it like you’re squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube.

Wanna wash your wig? Keep it cute: no roughness allowed!

Step 3: Condition it up, buttercup!✨

Y’all, this next step is LIFE. You cannot skip conditioning.

  1. Apply a generous amount of sulfate-free conditioner (duh). If you’ve got a wig-specific conditioner even better. Your goal is to keep the wig hydrated and silky. Focus on the lengths and ends—don’t go ham on the scalp area cause it won’t make much of a difference.
  2. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, like how you leave a hair mask on your own head when you wanna give your hair a glow-up. Use this time to scroll TikTok or take a cute break—multitasking, right? 😉
  3. Rinse that wig GENTLY under cold or lukewarm water until it feels smooth and all the conditioner is out. You want no residue left behind. None. Zip. Zilch.

Step 4: Towel dry but don’t death grip it! 🚫

Don’t go savage on me now! Drying the wig properly is just as important as every other step.

  1. Grab a microfiber towel (or an old cotton T-shirt if you’re keeping it sustainable and cute). Microfiber is ya girl when it comes to preventing frizz and breakage.
  2. Gently pat out the excess water. Don’t ever wring the wig! Not unless you’re into frizz city. Just pat it down softly like you’re babying a newborn kitten.

Step 5: Air dry, darling! 💁‍♀️

So listen, I know you’re tempted to speed this up with a blow dryer. DON’T. Not unless you have a dryer with cool settings, cause heat = major wig damage. Legit, your wig could get fried, and no one has time for that.

  1. Place your wig on a wig stand so it can air dry in its natural shape. If you don’t have a wig stand, no worries—you could lay it on a flat surface, but keep flipping it every so often so it dries evenly.
  2. Wait it out. Depending on the density of your wig, it may take a few hours to dry completely—so Netflix and chill while you wait.👍

Step 6: Style it like a pro! 😎

Alright, now the fun part: once your wig is dry, you can slay the styling game!

  1. Brush through again just to make sure everything’s all smooth and detangled. Use that wide-tooth comb or detangling brush again.
  2. If you’re gonna use any heat tools like a flat iron or curling wand, ALWAYS use heat protectant spray. This is SO important. Wigs can’t repair or grow hair like we can, so once damage is done, well… it’s done. 💀 Apply that heat protectant like your friend applies 5 filters on their Insta story! 😆

Heat on a wig should always come with a side of: “OMG did I use protection?”

Bonus Tips 💗

  • Don’t wash your wig too much, okay? Every 8-10 wears should do the trick unless you’re sweating or living your best life in a humid place. Over-washing just makes the wig dry and blah—no one needs that.

  • Protect your wig at night. If you sleep in your wig (hey, no judgment 🤷‍♀️), give it some love with a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap it in a silk scarf.

  • Be careful in the sun! UV rays can damage the color of your beautiful wig in the same way it can lighten natural hair. Consider wearing a hat or scarf if you’re gonna be out there gleaming like Edward Cullen in the sun for a long time.

  • Store your wig properly. Don’t just toss it on the floor in a messy heap (been there, done that). Store it on a wig stand to preserve the shape and avoid tangles.

Wig care checklist:

Task How often?
Wash Every 8-10 wears
Condition Every time you wash
Detangle Before and after wearing or washing
Air dry or cool dry Every wash
Heat protect and style When using heat tools

And there you have it, boo! Your human hair wig will be soft, shiny, and #hairgoals in no time. Plus, it’ll last soooo much longer if you follow this routine. So your investment? Totally worth it.

Honestly, taking care of a wig is kinda like taking care of your skin—you just need the right steps and the right products. Plus, when you give it love and patience, it’s gonna love you right back and have you looking fierce every day.
