How to Care For Lip Fillers?

Okay, before we jump in, let’s get one thing straight: if you’ve had your lips done, congrats babe! Whether you went for a subtle plump or something more dramatic, living your best lip filler life is all about taking care of that juicy investment. I get soooo many questions about filler care from my clients, so I wanted to throw together this lil’ guide on how to keep those lips looking full and FRESH after getting them filled. 💋

What to Do Right After Getting Fillers

So you’ve arrived home after your lip filler appointment, feeling all sorts of fabulous (because you so should). But there’s something that happens after the fillers that’s less glamorous: swelling and possibly some bruising. It’s like… calm down lips, this isn’t drama class. But don’t freak out because this is 100% normal. Your lips and skin are just adjusting to their new BFF (aka the filler).

Here’s how you can calm things down:

  1. Ice, Ice Baby (But Gently!) 🧊
Grab an ice pack or even a bag of frozen peas — totally multi-purpose, right? — and pop that on your lips for 10-15 minutes at a time. But don’t put it directly on your skin, or you might end up with a cooling burn you didn’t sign up for. Instead, wrap it up in a soft towel. This will reduce the swelling and keep bruising in check.
  2. No Straws, No Smoking🚫
Seriously though, I know sipping through a straw is like subconscious at this point (thanks to Starbucks), but straws cause puckering, and post-filler, you wanna avoid pucker-face. Same goes for smoking. Give it a few days before you purse ‚em up again.
  3. Skip Fancy Smancy Lip Products for a While 💄
I PROMISE you’ll live without your lip liner for a few days. Avoid wearing any heavy lipsticks or glosses for at least 24 hours. Your lips will get all moody if you introduce heavy products too soon. Keep things minimal and let your lips just chill.

”Skipping lip gloss for two days will not hurt you. Trust the process, boo!”

  1. Don’t Touch 🚨
I know the temptation to touch, poke, or prod your lips is REAL, okay? But just don’t. The fillers are still doing their thing, and playing around with them might move things or cause irritation. So, hands off for the first couple of days.

Making Sure Your Lip Fillers Last

Guess what? While fillers technically last anywhere from 6 to 12 months (depending on the type you got and your body’s ability to break them down), how you take care of your lips makes a HUGE difference in how long those fillers stay looking fab. So it’s like having a 12-month long relationship with your lips! 🫶

Here’s how to stay BFFs longer:

  1. Moisturize Like It’s Your JOB
With all the filler action going down, your lips are going to need extra hydration. Think of moisturizing as feeding your filler — it keeps everything plump and smooth. Use a hydrating lip balm with hyaluronic acid. Yes, the same ingredient in your filler can also sit on your lips.

    Some faves you’ll wanna try:

    • Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (overnight magic)
    • Glossier Balm Dotcom (it’s cute and works)

Remember, dry lips don’t equal plump lips, sis. Hydration is key to keeping everything juicy.

  2. Sun Protection, But for Your Lips☀️
You use SPF on your face, right? (Obviously, you do!) But now that you have fillers, those lips need extra protection from the sun too. Sun exposure can break down your filler faster, and no one wants that. Find a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher, like the Supergoop PLAY Lip Balm. It’s a MUST every single day when you’re out in the sun unless you want your filler to fade faster than that TikTok dance trend.
  3. Avoid Over-Exfoliating🚨
Okay, we’re all here for some lip scrubs. Fresh, exfoliated lips are everything… but not too much after fillers. You’ve got to give those lips some time to settle before you go full exfoliation mode. Once your lips are healed (after like a week) and the swelling’s gone, THEN you can gently exfoliate. Once a week should be chill. Too much scrubbing, and you might cause irritation or make the filler move around. Eeek… no thanks!

Things Your Lip Fillers Will HATE 😡

Not to sound all dramatic, but fillers have feelings too (okay, not literally). But still, there are some major filler no-no’s if you want them to last and look amazing. Think of these as the “bad vibes” for your lips:

  • Intense Heat Like Saunas, Hot Yoga, or Sunburns
Sizzling weather and hot environments are not your lips’ friends. The heat can cause the filler to break down quicker — yup, that’s right. While you can still get your workout grind on at hot yoga, just wait a week or two post-filler to make sure everything settles.
  • Sleeping on Your Face 😴
This is one you might not think about, but pressing your face into your pillow all night can also move your filler — especially in the first 48 hours. Try to sleep on your back if you’re a side sleeper like me! I love using silk pillowcases because they’re gentle for your skin and lips.
  • Dehydration🚱
Drink your water, honey! Fillers thrive on being hydrated. Chugging soda or coffee over water all the time will make your filler dissolve faster. Water = plump lips, caffeine… not so much.

”Your lips are 74% water! If you want that plump to last, drink up, babe!”

When Should You Get a Touch-Up?

Ahhh, the question! “So, how often do I need to get a touch-up?”

There’s no magic number, but most fillers last 6 to 12 months, depending on your body and the type of filler used. You’ll start to notice your lips naturally getting a little thinner, usually around the 6-month mark. At this point, it’s time to call your injector and schedule a mini refresh if you wanna keep that boost going.

Here’s a lil’ pro tip: Don’t wait till ALL of your filler has disappeared; this helps avoid needing a whole new full session (and paying extra $$). Instead, do a smaller touch-up every six months or so to keep everything full but still looking natural.

When to See Your Doctor (Cuz Safety First!)

So, usually, things go completely fine post-filler. But sometimes — and this is rare — things go sideways. Like, if your lips start getting really painful, super red, or you have any crazy lumps or bumps that don’t go away after a few days, it’s important to see your injector ASAP. We love to treat ourselves, but safety always comes first.

Let’s Talk Results Expectations

Okay, sometimes (thanks to Insta filters and Photoshop), people come in thinking they’re gonna walk out with Kylie-level lips from a single session. And while lip fillers will definitely give you more volume and shape, remember that subtlety is often key (unless you wanna go big, big — then, you do you, boo).

Your lips might feel firm at first, and that’s totally normal. It takes a week or two for them to soften up and for the final look to settle in. So, if you’re like “OMG my lips feel fake,” give it a little time. Trust me. 👄

Final Thoughts: Be Confident in Your Filler Choices

At the end of the day, lip fillers are meant to enhance what you already have — and make you feel like an absolute queen while doing it. So the key isn’t just the appointment; it’s what you do AFTER that matters. Less is always more when it comes to maintenance, and trust me, your lips will thank you for keeping them hydrated, protected, and pampered.

Honestly, though, filler or no filler, your lips (and YOU) are fab exactly how you are. Just saying. 💋💕

Stay fabulous, my lip-loving baddies. 💖
