Lip Gloss Origins: Who Made It First?

Okay, so how many of you are obsessed with lip gloss? 🙋 I know I am, like, give me that shiny, glossy goodness any day. It’s kinda wild to think how lip glosses are legit having their moment right now, right? But here’s the real tea: When and how did lip gloss even become a thing? Yeah… let’s talk about it. We’re about to drop some serious makeup history. Buckle up, babes (not actual seatbelts though 🫣).
I mean, we’ve got lipsticks, lip balms, tints, stains… and yet, here we are—loving gloss, the one that gives that juicy, mirror-like finish we can’t get enough of. Let’s take a glossy look back and find out who was slaying the lip game wayyyy before any of us were born. Because makeup might be all about the latest trends, but trust me, its history is just as juicy.
The Gloss Queen: Max Factor’s Shiny Moment 💄
Okay, first off—Shoutout to Max Factor for basically being the OG for most things glam. Yep, the iconic brand that’s still standing. He was a Hollywood makeup artist who pretty much invented a ton of things we use today. If you haven’t heard his name, it’s time to give Max some credit for being one of the masterminds behind the glam we know and love.
Here’s the fun part: In freaking 1930, Max thought, “Y’know what? We need some ✨shine✨ for those lips!” Movie stars back then wanted to dazzle on the silver screen (we love a glowy queen 💅).
Max Factor was like, Stan Lee but for makeup! He invented lip gloss, yes, but also things like foundation and mascara for Hollywood. Without him, red carpet looks would be *boringggg*!
So, he decided to create a lip product that not only added color but also a glistening, glamorous finish. Lip gloss was born, honey!
Now, here’s what’s crazy: The original formula was SUPER thick, way different from the lightweight glosses we wear today. It was designed specifically for film stars, because y’know, back then, making people look flawless on camera was all about THAT. Like, early Hollywood literally shone harder than your Fenty gloss bomb highlighter.
The First-Ever Gloss: X-Rated (Sort of 🤭)
Ya’ll ready for this? Max Factor’s first lip gloss had such a glam name. It was called X-Rated. 👀 Honestly, don’t freak out; back in the day, it didn’t carry quite the same vibe as it does today.
The purpose of X-Rated was to help actors’ lips look poppin’ under those super harsh lights they used on movie sets. Remember, cameras weren’t as good as our iPhones, okay? They needed ALL the help. 📸 But get this: Max Factor’s X-Rated was also eventually advertised to regular makeup lovers, soooo basically, if you were slaying the streets in the 1930s, this was THE gloss everyone was vibing with.
From Screen To Shelf: Who Even Wears Gloss IRL?
As you can guess, lip gloss wasn’t about staying just on movie sets. Max Factor was like, “Wait, don’t y’all wanna be as shiny and bomb as the stars?!” And obviously, the beauty world screamed: YESSS! 🙌💋
By the time the ’50s and ’60s came around, women everywhere wanted shiny, pouty lips. You know that iconic Marilyn Monroe red lip? Now imagine that level of oomph, but with an ultra-glossy touch. Brands started diving into the gloss game (or should I say jumping onto the bandwagon, ha), and suddenly, you could buy glosses left and right. Sure, they were thick, and yeah, some formulas were SUPER sticky (ew), but ya’ll know the beauty grind never stops. Work in progress!
Gloss Life in the ‘90s & Early 2000s: Peak Gloss Energy
Fast-forward to the ultimate Y2K era. If you’re anyone who grew up in the late ‘90s and ‘00s (okayyyy millennials), you definitely remember just how big lip gloss was. Like, if you didn’t have lip gloss in your tiny plastic purse WITH the butterfly clips in your hair, were you even a cool kid?
There’s no debate: The early 2000s was the golden era of lip gloss. You literally could not step into a mall without seeing glossy lips shining at you from everywhere. And every teen magazine basically screamed at you to get your hands on a tube.
“Remember the days of frosty lip gloss? Don’t lie, we all owned one… or like 20.”
Popular brands? Oh boy, let me just drop some names that’ll hit you with all the nostalgia feels:
– Lip Smackers – Yo, if you didn’t hoard cola or watermelon Lip Smackers in your backpack, were you even living? 🍉
– Lancôme Juicy Tubes – Can I get an “Amen?” These were everything. Tiny, shiny tubes of pure lip heaven.
– Bonne Bell – Every teen girl’s gateway to shiny, fruity-flavored lips.
If you want to relive this glossy nostalgia, I’m 100% confident your fave throwback movie will come with someone slathering on some sparkly pink gloss.
But Guess What? Gloss DID Disappear! (R.I.P. Lip Gloss??)
Okay, before you start crying gloss-shaped tears, let’s talk quickly about the little gloss drought we had. Womp womp.
So, you know how fashion and makeup trends just flip-flop between glam and understated SO fast? Well, gloss kind of faded away for a minute in the early 2010s. Shocking, right?
It was matte liquid lipsticks’ fault, TBH. They came in with a vengeance, and everybody traded shine for these hyper-pigmented, stay-put lips. If matte liquid lipsticks were people, I swear they would be wearing leather jackets and fighting gloss lovers with “no transfer” promises. 😂 But don’t worry; gloss wasn’t gone forever.
The Gloss Comeback: We’re BACK, Baby!
Honestly, IT WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN. 2017—the year we all collectively decided: “You know what? Let’s make our lips shiny again!” And just like that, lip gloss came back with a vengeance. Full circle moment. Thanks to brands like Fenty Beauty (thank you Rih!) with their Gloss Bombs, the gloss revival was stronger than ever.
Lip gloss in the 21st century? It’s light, it’s non-sticky, it moisturizes, and it’s everything you ever wanted without being annoying AF. We love character development!
Now, brands legit put science into keeping glosses comfy. They’re all about moisturizing but without the clingy-sticky mess. Plus, the sheer shades? OB-sessed. The Glass Skin trend also played a huge role, because hello, glossy lips are the original reflected light for your face. 😍
Did COVID Just Happen Along… and Cancel Gloss? 👀
Before you go and blame COVID for everything yet again, let’s break it down a bit. Yes, masks did mess up our glossy lips momentarily because no one wanted that gloss smeared everywhere—or worse, stuck on the inside of their mask. UGH. But the beauty industry adjusted fast and got all creative with non-transfer glosses and balms! We love a resilient product launch moment! 🙏
As masks slowly came off and the world opened up again, that lip moment you’ve been waiting for? It returned—and then some. Brands like Glossier, Tarte, and Pat McGrath—everyone is, like, on the gloss train again, but it’s glossier (hehe) and fancier now.
Glosses Today: So. Many. Choices.
Alright, so we’ve made our way to 2023, and guess what? We have more options than ever! From tinted to clear, sparkly to holographic… there’s literally a gloss for every vibe and aesthetic now. And the formulas? Chefs kiss 💋.
Here are some of my current faves (because obviously, I am a gloss stan):
– Fenty Gloss Bomb – The GOAT of glosses. Rihanna did that. Period.
– Maybelline Lifter Gloss – Affordable AND gives you plush, plump lips. Win.
– NYX Butter Gloss – A drugstore fav. If you know, you know.
– Tower 28 ShineOn Gloss – A vegan gem. Your lips will feel like a cloud.
The Gloss-tastic Future 👄✨
Where’s gloss going next? IDK, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that this beauty staple is here to stay. I’m calling it now: even more shimmery glosses are on the way, with formulas that will get even more lightweight and nourishing. 🌟 Give me all the “glass lips” looks, please!
From Hollywood’s golden age to your makeup drawer, lip gloss has been on a crazy ride, and we’re not mad about it. Whether you’re rocking a natural shine or layering it over your favorite lipstick, gloss is an ICON for a reason. Max Factor wouldn’t even believe what his little 1930 creation has turned into. 😎
Now, excuse me while I unapologetically layer some more gloss on these lips of mine. 💁♀️💄
