How to Make Lip Liner Last?

Let’s talk about something we all wanna know: how to make your lip liner last forever ;  or at least until you’re done slaying your look for the day, right? We’ve all been there: you spend time perfecting that snatched lip line, blending it for the perfect ombré or just making your lips look fuller, but a couple of hours later…poof it’s like it vanished into thin air. Yeah, no one asked for that.

But guess what? I gotchu! I’m about to spill the tea on how to make your lip liner last longer and keep it on point all day long (or all night if you’re, like, out past your bed time ;  no judgment here). Get comfy because we’re about to level up your lip game. 😘💋

Prep Your Lips Like a Pro

First off, before you even touch that lip liner, you need to make sure your lips are a smooth canvas. And no, I don’t mean just slapping on some chapstick and hoping for the best.

Exfoliate Like You Mean It

One of the most underrated steps in the makeup game: lip exfoliation. Think about it, if you try to paint on a rough canvas, the finish won’t be smooth, right? Same goes for your lips. If your lips are flaky or dry, that lip liner (or lipstick for that matter) doesn’t stand a chance. It’ll look patchy and wear off faster than your TikTok watch time.

Grab a lip scrub or make your own with some sugar and honey. Gently scrub your lips, and bam! Soft, smooth lips that are ready for action. Plus, exfoliating makes your lips look plumper, and we stan that.

Always start with fresh, clean, and smooth lips for max staying power!

Hydrate But Don’t Go Overboard

After you exfoliate, you’ll wanna hydrate. But, here’s the catch – don’t overdo it with your lip balm or gloss before the liner, or else it’ll slide around like last night’s mistakes (yikes). You want your lips moisturized, but not slippery, mkay?

Use a lightweight lip balm and let it absorb completely. Then (and I cannot stress this enough), blot off any extra. You need those lips perfectly primed and not gooey. Your lip liner should feel like its got something to hold onto, not like it’s about to go for a slip-and-slide adventure.

Prime Time, Baby!

Okay, so you’ve heard of priming your skin before foundation, right? The same principle applies here! Using a lip primer –– yes, that’s a thing, and it works wonders –– is your next move. This stuff helps your lip liner and lipstick cling to your lips better, fills any tiny lines, and gives a smoother result. It’s like glue for your lips, but way more comfortable and less sticky. Trust me, it’s worth adding to your routine.

If you don’t have a dedicated lip primer, concealer can also do the trick! Just dab a small amount of concealer over your lips and blend it out. It’s the perfect base if you don’t want your natural lip color to peek through either!

And here’s the magic key:

Prime those lips to keep your liner and lipstick locked in for hours!

Outline Like A Boss

Alrightttt, once you’ve got your lips exfoliated and primed, it’s time for the fun part – lip liner. Let’s be real, we wanna make sure this ish stays sharp AF all day.

Here’s what you can do to level up your outlining game:
1. Sharp Liner Only: Blunt pencils are a NO. Always use a sharpener before you start lining to get those crisp edges.
2. Small Strokes, Sis: Instead of dragging it in one long line (and risking unevenness), go for small, light strokes. It helps in controlling the shape AND stops it from looking too harsh.
3. Line Inside The Lip Line: If you overline (like I do because, duh, Kylie Jenner inspo), that’s okay, but don’t overdo it! Just a tiny bit outside the lip line will give you a pout, without looking wild. Pro tip: start from the middle of your lips and work outwards.

A sharp lip liner = sharp results. Keep it precise to make it last longer!

Double Down: Fill In Those Lips

Gonna let you in on a little secret I swear by: fill in your lips with the liner too, not just the edges. This one trick will keep your lip color together, even if your lipstick starts to fade after lunch (we all know that struggle). Filling the entire lip creates a solid base for your lipstick to hold onto, which makes everything stay looking ✨chef’s kiss✨.

The Art of Blotting and Reapplying

Once your lip liner is in place and all filled in, it’s time for the next layer. But here’s where many people mess up: they throw on their lipstick or colored gloss and call it a day. Wrong. What you wanna do instead is a little trick called layering.

First off, after you apply your liner and lippie, blot it with a tissue. Blotting removes any excess oil or product. Then, lightly apply another layer. This technique keeps your lip color from just sitting on the surface; instead, it layers into your lips and becomes way more long-lasting.

Set It Like You Mean It

Ready for another pro tip? Setting your lips – yep, like setting spray for your whole face, but for your lips! You can actually use finishing powder to set your lip liner and lipstick in place. Here’s what you do:

  1. Place a one-ply tissue over your lips.
  2. Using a fluffy brush, gently dab some translucent setting powder over the tissue.

This trick isn’t too heavy or cakey- it’ll tone down shine and up the lasting power like crazy.

Setting your lips with powder makes your liner and lipstick stick WAY longer. Trust.

Now, if you want a glossier or creamier finish – you can still apply your gloss or lipstick at the end and skip the powder part. Just remember, gloss doesn’t exactly scream long-lasting, but applying a matte lipstick underneath can help the gloss stick around.

Drink + Eat Smart

Okay, I know this seems extra, but hear me out. There are ways to extend how long your lip liner (and lipstick) stay flawless even when you eat. Avoid oily foods when you can because oils literally break down makeup. If you’re sipping on your iced latte, try using a straw! Less contact with your lips means your lip look stays intact. We keep it cute while munching on snacks, right? 😏

Oh, and DON’T rub your lips together all day. It doesn’t help anything; making it a habit to do that can smear the product over time.

Touch-Ups, But Make It Minimal

Of course you might need to touch up throughout the day, and that’s okay – just make it count. Instead of reapplying layers on layers and possibly caking it up, use a tissue to blot away any patchy spots and then go in with a small amount of product. By doing this, you avoid a chunky lip mess while still keeping your lip definition on point.

Recap: Lip Liner That Stays Snatched

Here’s your TL;DR in case you (like me, lolz) always skip to the bottom for bullet points:

– Hydrate with a lil’ lip balm and blot away extra
– For staying power: prime those lips!
Sharp liner only, please
– Don’t just line them – fill them in!
– Blot and reapply to layer the color
– Optional: set with translucent powder for serious staying power
– Avoid oily foods + use straws

And voila! You’re officially ready to make that lip liner last as long as your selfies do. No more fading, smudging, or retouching every 30 minutes – and you’ll be walking around knowing your lip game is on LOCK. 😎 You’re welcome! Now go give those lips the spotlight they deserve, bb. 💄💋
