Lip Liners

Who Invented Lip Liner?

Okayyyyyy, let’s talk about lip liner! I know, you probably didn’t wake up today asking “Oh, who actually invented lip liner?” but seriously, if you’re like me and always reaching for that trusty liner in your makeup bag before slaying your lipstick game, this is definitely something fun to think about. Who was the genius that thought: “Hmm, we need this pencil to outline lips?” Like, yes. Thank you.

First of all, if you’re new here to Su’s corner, haiii 🎉! I’m your favorite beach-loving makeup artist who’s always covered in lipstick swatches, and today, we’re gonna spill the gloss, erm tea, on the OG of lip liner. Let’s throw it back (waaay back) and talk about how we even got here.

Because believe it or not, this was not a 2010s thing. Your fav TikTok influencers didn’t just suddenly “invent” the look. Lip liner has some solid history, babes. Let’s gooo 👀💄.

Lip Liner Origins: Wayyyy B.C. (Before Chapstick, LOL)

Okay, so real talk? Makeup itself has been around for legit millennia. Like, Cleopatra didn’t just roll out of bed looking that flawless 🙅🏽‍♀️. Ancient civilizations used different stuff to paint their faces, including their lips (duh!). You can look at places like Egypt, Mesopotamia, and even Ancient Greece as the original hubs of beauty inspo. TBH, I live for the drama of Ancient Egyptian eyeliner and lip looks—so fierce.

But here’s the thing: while women (and men, yes) were slaying these looks, there wasn’t exactly something modern like a makeup pencil for your lips. They were more into, like, crushed berries and minerals. Definitely not the kind of thing to toss in your purse.

Even ancient Sumerians and Egyptians were known for darkening their lips with various natural pigments, but skip forward like, quite a few centuries…and enter the 20th century. Our grandmas were into this!

The Rise of Modern Lip Liner: 1920s All The Way, Babe

Fast forward to the 1920s—literally the first modern beauty revolution. Picture those ICONIC flappers with their bobbed hair, dark eyes, and real vampy lips 😍. Fun fact: THIS is where the idea of overdrawing lips came to life! Yup, even back then, everyone wanted fuller lips. Gotta make those lips poutier for the gram…I mean, for silent films 😂!

Now, I can’t throw an exact name at you like “oh X person INVENTED lip liner,” but in the ’20s, makeup companies def started creating products that would eventually lead to the modern pencil we love today. With Hollywood booming, actresses had to have their lips On. Point. They were over the top (just like me when I see a new eyeshadow palette), and they wanted their lips lined sharply and dramatically.

It was common to use a small brush, dipped in a lipstick-like product, to define the lips. Still, it was around that time that various makeup companies were working on a more convenient version of eras…and our girl lip liner soon showed up.

In the 1920s, makeup became a tool for expressing freedom, fun, and flirtation. Lip liner was at the forefront of that glam rebellion!

The Actual Pencil Moment: Enter Max Factor 🎨✍🏽

Okay, here’s where we throw some confetti 🎉.

We cannot (repeat: CANNOT) talk about modern beauty without mentioning Max Factor! This beauty icon was a makeup artist turned legend. And in the 1920s and later decades, he was the one pushing forward all these beauty innovations, especially for the Hollywood crowd.

He was, like, super determined to create all these super specialized products. He needed makeup to last through the intensity of Hollywood lights (imagine no air conditioning and sweating through your cat eye – tragic!). So he developed not just cool lipsticks but also a pencil-like tool to help outline lips. That’s right, kiddos; the father of modern cosmetics had a big hand in the early versions of lip liners 🎤💄.

Max Factor created some of the earliest lip contouring tools, contour creams, and formulas designed to compliment a woman’s lip shape 💋.

By the 1940s, thanks to the golden age of cinema, lined lips were EVERYTHING. Seriously, think of classic pin-up dolls and actresses like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth, who were total lip liner queens 👑. They redefined how Hollywood glam meant sharp, bold, tidy lips. Makeup companies were like, “yup, everyone wants to look like THIS,” so they started making affordable, easy-to-use lip liners for regular peeps, too.

And look, tbh, if Max didn’t do his makeup magic, we might not have our fave rows of lip liners at Ulta 🥵.

Lip Liner Through the Decades: How it Grew!

Okay, let’s keep the timeline poppin’.

Decade Lip Liner Trend
1920s Thin, precise lines creating sharp arches, mostly for film stars ✨.
1930s Softer, more natural outlines—less drama, but muted glam on the rise.
1940s Bold overdrawn lips! Think those dramatic pin-ups. Red EVERYWHERE 🔥.
1950s That same sharp reds stayed, but now everyone was about that lip line, not just movie stars.
1980s HELLOOO. This is the era that defined lip liner for us. Earth tones, brown lips, heavy outlining.
1990s Shoutout to dark-lined lips with lighter lip gloss. So Y2K of us. 💁🏽‍♀️
2000s Fuller, glossier lips with more defined liner, less focus on contrast.
2010s+ A bit of everything tbh. Gloss revival. Mattes taking over. Fuller lips with overdrawing 🔥.

As you can see, lip liner used to be all about precision and just outlining. It wasn’t until the ’80s and ’90s that things really popped off. In the ’80s we saw like, everybody—from your mom to Madonna—start really defining lips with brown hues or crazy shimmery lipsticks. Like, if you weren’t rocking a bold lip line with neon pink lipstick, were you even an ’80s icon? 💅🏽

Of course, leave it to Gen Z and the latest TikTok trends to bring back the darker lip liner and lighter gloss trend from the ’90s. I’m obsessed with the nostalgia feels.

The Cultural Impact: Let’s Talk Icons

Okay, but like, why has lip liner been soooo strong in our makeup routines for decades? It’s legit a beauty staple. I mean, part of it has to do with how influential beauty icons were in each era.

Like, remember the ’90s? Aaliyah and J.Lo just embodied the perfectly overlined nude-esque lips. Like, those brownish liners with the frosty-ish gloss on top? ICONIC. Then we had that Marilyn Monroe glam from the ’50s. Oh, and let’s not even forget about MADONNA ruling lip liner land in the ’80s (love ya, Madonna, thanks for “Like A Prayer” 😭).

“Beauty to me is about being comfortable in your skin. That, or a kick-ass lip liner.” – Gwen Stefani

Gwen was doing the lip liner thing before Y2K was even cool again. It was part of her whole punk rock/Viva Glam moment. But, whether you’re looking at the pop queens or the TikTok queens, you can see that lip liner is a status symbol. It’s confidence. Because honestly, a well-shaped bold lip says the same thing: “look at meee, I’m here to slay. Period!”

The Science and Magic of Liner: Why Does It Even Matter So Much?

We got all historical, but let’s get ~technical~ for the makeup geeks (like me). What’s the real point of lip liner? Apart from making us feel super sharp?

Well, lip liner is our bulletproof vest in the world of lip products.

It keeps stuff where it’s supposed to be. Ever had your lipstick wander outside your lip line, leaving you looking a little like a toddler with a popsicle? No thanks. It holds your lipstick in place and literally carves out a path for your lipstick or gloss to follow when applied. Not to mention, it gives your lips that fuller, more defined look. Can you say “hello, plumpy juicy lips”?

Another low-key reason we stan lip liners? They’re multipurpose 🎨. You can fully fill in your lips and call it a day. Or layer with lipstick or gloss for that dreamy combo. Name any other makeup product that’s this powerful.

Where We Are Now: Lip Liner in 2023 💄✨

If you’re seeing what I’m seeing, then you know lip liner is having a moment right now and I am LOVING every second of it. While we still adore makeup no-makeup lips, we definitely love revisiting everything about that perfect over-lined pout. It gives that insta-worthy vibe or TikTok-ready slay.

Today…we blend. We overdraw. Heck, we fake fuller lips without going under the needle by using them strategically! Modern faves? The ultra-creamy formulas (get you some of that NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner or Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat ASAP if you haven’t yet!!). Plus, with so many influencers and brands pushing boundary-breaking looks, lip liner is definitely sticking around.

So snap that selfie, feel the nostalgia, and know that the humble lip outlining pencil is actually a beauty OG. We seriously owe the thousands of years before us 🙌🏽.

That’s the 411 on lip liners, babe. Now go line your lips like the boss you are 💋.
