Stain Solutions: How Do You Get Lipstick Out of Clothes?

Lipstick. It’s the best… until it’s not. Like, you rock a killer lip look, totally feeling like the main character, then BAM! Disaster strikes! You somehow end up with that gorgeous red, pink, or mauve smeared across your fave shirt (or even worse… your crush’s white hoodie). 💀

Okay, first things first: Don’t panic. Trust me, as a makeup artist, lipstick stains happen. A lot. I’m here to show you how to undo the damage, ‘cause no one has time for stressing over laundry. Keep reading and by the end you’ll be a stain-removal queen! 👑💄

Step 1: Act Fast or Regret Later

If you notice the stain right away, you’re already ahead of the game. Lipsticks (especially matte and long-lasting ones) are designed to stick—Girl, they be CLINGY. And trust, the faster you catch that stain, the easier it’ll be to lift it off. You don’t want the oils and pigments to settle into the fabric.

So, right when disaster strikes, grab a paper towel. Do not rub it! That’ll smudge it further into your clothes and make a mini lipstick crime scene. Just blot the stain gently to remove as much of the excess lipstick as possible. We’re trying to save the shirt here, not make things worse.

Now, let’s break this down into two teams depending on how good you were at catching that stain: Fresh Stains and Dry/Set-In Stains.

Team Fresh Stain: Let’s Do This 💪

Okayyyyyy Fresh Stain: The MVP of the stain world b/c it’s the easiest to tackle. You’ve blotted the stain, great! Now it’s time to put in a little elbow grease (but like…not too much cause we don’t want more mess).

Here’s how you can handle a fresh lipstick stain:

1. Liquid Dish Soap or Laundry Detergent
– Squirt a tiny bit of either liquid dish soap or laundry detergent on the stain.
– 🧼 Gently rub it in with your fingers or a soft toothbrush. The goal is to break down the oils and waxes in the lipstick without scrubbing so hard that you ruin your clothes.
– Let it sit for about 10 minutes. It helps the soap really sink in (get scientific on that stain).

2. Cold Water Wins (ALWAYS)
– Don’t. Use. Hot. Water. I mean it. Hot water will make the stain lock in foreverrrr and we’re not trying to cry over a stained top today.
– Rinse with cold water to flush out the lipstick, starting from the back of the fabric to push it out, not in.
– Repeat if needed.

3. Pat Dry
– Once rinsed, pat dry with a clean towel or cloth. 👗✨ If you’re still seeing some traces of the lipstick, try it again with more dish soap or head to the Team Dry/Set-In Stain strategies…

Special Tip: If you’re out and about with no soap handy and you need an emergency fix, hit up a restroom and use some clear hand sanitizer (yup, the same one from your purse) or makeup remover wipes. Just make sure you blot instead of rubbing!

Team Set-In Dry Stains: It’s Gonna Be Work, But We Got This

Okay, so maybe you didn’t realize you’d smeared lipstick on your shirt until you got home, or you just now noticed it after laundry day. No worries! Set-in stains are trickier, but they’re not impossible. It’s just, ya know, a bit more work.

Here’s how you’ll conquer these ones:

1. Hittin’ the Stain With Hairspray (Yup, You Read That Right) 🎯

Hairspray isn’t just for defying the laws of gravity with a messy bun. You can totally use it to fight your lipstick disaster.

  • Douse the stain with hairspray. Like, really spray it up. Then, let that sit for about 10-15 minutes.
  • After that, grab a damp cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush, and gently rub the spot to lift off the lipstick pigments.
  • Rinse with cold water, and repeat if needed. Yes, this may take a few rounds depending on how savage the stain is.

2. Vinegar + Dish Soap = Ultimate Power Duo

If dish soap alone ain’t cutting it, team it up with vinegar. The acidity in vinegar can loosen the pigments and chemical bonds like a baddie.

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and liquid dish soap, then use a sponge or cloth to blot the mixture on the stain.
  • Let it sit for a while (like 5-10 minutes), then scrub it gently with a brush. Again, cold water rinse is your bestie.
  • Pat dry with a towel & see if the stain’s gone.

3. Makeup Remover for Stubborn Lipsticks (The Plot Twist!)

You know how makeup remover magically erases 24-hour-wear mascara from our lashes after a long day? Welp, it can also save your day with lipstick stains.

  • Use either an oil-based makeup remover or micellar water. Dab it on the stain (don’t use too much so you don’t leave an oily mark afterward).
  • Let it chill there for about 10 minutes, then dab again to soak it up!
  • Toss it in the wash if you’re feeling extra cautious to get rid of the oily bits, or rinse out with cold water.

Dedicated Cleaners: To the Rescue (AKA If Everything Else Fails)

Not all heroes wear capes…some come in bottles. 😏 If the DIY tricks aren’t working, you might want to bring out the big guns with stain removers you can grab from the store. Things like OxiClean MaxForce or Shout can help save the day, even for the stubbornest lipsticks.

Best Store-Bought Stain Removers:

Product How to Use
OxiClean MaxForce Spray on the stain, let sit for 5-10 mins, toss in the wash.
Shout Advanced Gel Apply generously on the stain, leave for a few minutes, then wash.
Zout Laundry Stain Remover Squirt onto lipstick mark, let it sit for 5 minutes before scrubbing.

All these options are super easy to find at your local grocery store or online. It’s always a good idea to keep something like this handy for those seriously annoying stains that just don’t wanna come out. 🤦‍♀️

What About Different Fabrics? 👀

Different fabrics sometimes call for different tactics. It’s the annoying truth, but there’s always hope! Here’s how to handle the main fabric squad when they catch some lipstick:

Cotton & Polyester: The Everyday Basics

You can literally follow the steps I’ve mentioned above for these guys. 🤙 Power through it with the dish soap, hairspray, or vinegar combo. They can handle it—just be a little careful not to scrub your cotton fabrics too hard or you’ll end up with a weird ruined patch.

Silk & Delicates: The Drama Queens 🎭

Ohhhh, silk. I love wearing you but WHY you gotta be so hard to care for?! Unlike cotton, silk is way more delicate, so ditch the dish soap and harsh scrubbing. Instead, mix a little bit of liquid detergent with water and blot the stain. Gently.

The number one rule? Test on a hidden part of your silk item first. Always. Unless you’re cool with accidental fade spots.

Wool: Keep It Chill 🐑

Wool needs that gentle touch too. Honestly, misuse anything harsher than a mild detergent (like Woolite) and you’ll have a bigger problem. Lightly blot the spot and rinse it out. Skip the super rough scrubbing unless you feel like ruining that investment.

Quick Recap for That Stain-Fighting Win:

One last thing: Why does lipstick insist on attaching itself to our cutest clothes anyway? 😩 Ain’t nobody got time for that! But at least now, you’re armed and ready to attack the stain before it has a chance to ruin your day.

Good luck, lipstick warriors! Stay fabulous, and keep those lip looks (and your clothes) flawless. 😘👑
