How to Do a Manicure at Home?

Hey beauty babes! ✨ I know we all LOVE a good manicure, but honestly… getting to the salon every two weeks can really start to add up. Plus, let’s be real—it’s kinda nice to just chill at home and treat yourself. Sooo, let’s talk about how you can totally DIY a salon-quality mani from the comfort of your couch (in your cute PJs, duh). Trust me, it’s way easier than you’d guess, and once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner!
Grab your nail kit, play your favorite playlist (hello, Harry Styles), and let’s get into it!
Step 1: Pre-Mani Prep: Clean Off The Old Stuff 💅
Before we even think about putting on new polish, we gotta make sure there’s no leftover nail stuff on your nails. Leftover polish ruins your fresh new look, and who wants that? I looove using a non-acetone nail polish remover because it’s nicer on your nails, but if you’re sportin’ gel or difficult-to-remove polish, you might need acetone to get the job done.
Pro tip:
If you have dried-up nail polish on the sides of your nails, grab a small cotton swab, dip it in remover, and clean it up like a boss!
After you remove all the old polish, wash your hands to get rid of any leftover remover. I say this because if the nail polish remover is hanging around, it can dry out your nails, and we are SO not here for that. 👎
Step 2: Prep Your Nails 🧼
Okay, THIS is where the magic starts. Prepping your nails is the key to a flawless manicure that lasts. So let’s buff those nail beds and get them ready to slay.
- Shape It Up: Decide what your nail shape vibe is. Go classic almond, rounded, square, or something in between. Take your nail file and file your nails gently. Also, don’t use a “sawing” motion—go ONE direction. This reduces risk of breakage. Plus, straight cuts are just more chic.
- Buff, Buff, Baby: Buffing might seem extra but TRUST me, buffing those nail surfaces not only smooths ’em out but also gives you the cutest base to work on. Buff in tiny, circular motions until your nails look smooth and a little shiny (but not too shiny because we still want the polish to stick).
- Push Those Cuticles Back: Grab a cuticle pusher, and gently push back your cuticles. You don’t need to cut them… just push ‘em back. Super simple, no need to get overly fancy. They’re like the frame of your manicure, so treat ‘em nicely!
Now on to pamper mode…
Step 3: (Optional) Soak Your Nails for Some TLC 💕
This is totally optional, but if you want to go full spa vibes, it’s obvi a cute move to soak your nails in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Maybe add a couple drops of your fave essential oil if you’re ~feeling fancy~.
After soaking: dry ‘em. Don’t leave them soaked for too long though, because it can weaken your nails if overdone!
Step 4: Moisturize and Get Ready to Polish 💧
Baby soft hands coming in hot! After all that prepping, your hands deserve some love.
Grab your favorite hand cream or cuticle oil and moisturize your hands and cuticles. Give them a lil’ massage to feel extra bougie. Make sure you moisturize right before applying nail polish so your mani turns out flawless.
Now that your hands and nails are soft and silky, we’re almost ready for the main event: PAINTING. But first, one quick step…
Before you move on:
Wipe any lotion off your nails! Polish doesn’t stick well to oily nails, and trust me—you don’t want to be that person with the chipped polish in a day. #SadFace
Use a little acetone on a cotton pad to wipe off any excess oils, and boom—your nails are prepped.
Step 5: Base Coat First! 🖤
Alright, it’s BASE COAT TIME—this is literally what’s going to keep that bomb polish from chipping too soon. A good base coat also makes your nails look WAY smoother, so don’t skip this.
I mean… let’s be real: base coat might feel like a meh step, but it’s SO important. Slide it over your nails starting from the base and swipe upwards. Is this part exciting? Not gonna lie, no. 🙈 BUT… future-you will be grateful when your mani still looks fire a week later.
Step 6: Time for Polish 💅🎨
Here we go—pick your color! What vibe are you feeling? Something bold like neon or a timeless nude? Whichever polish you choose, let’s get applying!
- Thin Coats, Bestie: It’s better to do a few thin coats rather than glob a huge glob of polish. Trust—thin coats dry faster and smudge way less. Plus, they just look better overall.
- The 3-Stroke Trick: The pro trick is to follow the “three strokes’ rule.” Start in the middle of your nail and brush up, then do the sides. Boom, done. This really helps keep the nail polish streak-free.#ManicureGoals
- Wait Between Coats: It’s hard (we all get impatient) but try to wait a MINUTE or so between each coat so your polish doesn’t get all goopy. Ugly clumpy polish? Hard pass.
For gel polish fans, if you have a UV lamp at home (lucky you), definitely use that to cure your layers. Gel needs to “cure” under the lamp after each coat!
Table of Polish Color Options:
| Color Vibe | Best For | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| Bold Neon | Summer vacay | Fun, playful vibes |
| Nude | Everyday wear | Classic queen |
| Greens & Blues | Trendy days | Out-of-the-box |
| Dark Colors | Date night/lux | Classy chic |
| Pinks & Pastels | Spring or party | Bubbly & light |
Step 7: Top It All Off With Top Coat ✨
Your mani won’t be complete without the finishing touch—the top coat! If the base coat was the foundation, then this is the protection. Top coat locks everything in, gives you that lil’ shine, and makes everything last longer. (And by longer, I mean like double the time… no joke!)
Swipe one layer of top coat over that stunning polish job you just did and you’re almost done. Cue the ✨let it shine✨ moment.
Quick Pro Tip:
Some people swear by a matte top coat for a chic, matte finish. So if you love that matte look… go for it. It’s just as fab, trust me!
Step 8: Let Your Nails Dry (TikTok Break Time?) 📱💅
The actual hardest part about doing your own nails? WAITING for them to dry. Girl, if you’re impatient (and same), this is the point where you gotta occupy yourself. Your hands are temporary hostages, lol.
I usually scroll through TikTok or binge-watch my fave shows. Just don’t touch ANYTHING for like 15 minutes (ugh, I know); otherwise, you’ll get smudges. And if you smudge your nails at this point, you and I both know you’ll be MAD.
Step 9: Clean Up the Edges 👌
One last lil’ trick: the clean-up process is what takes a home manicure from “cute” to “OMG you got these done at a salon?!” Remove any polish that snuck onto your cuticles or skin. I like to dip a brush or cotton swab in nail polish remover and go around my nails to make the edges super sharp.
Trust me, this makes a HUGE difference. 🖌️
And Boom—You’re Done! 🖤✌️
A whole at-home mani that could fool anyone into believing you just came back from the salon! If anyone asks where you got them done, flex on ‘em and let them know how easy it was. 👏 Now all you gotta do is enjoy your gorgeous nails!
Remember to show your freshly painted nails off on the ‘gram and tag me if you’re proud of how they turned out. Let’s see who’s really slaying the at-home manicure game. 💕 Stay fabulous, and happy polishing!
