How to Do a Manicure?

Alright, babes! So, you wanna know how to do a flawless manicure, am I right? 🙌 You’ve probably seen the craziest looks on Instagram or TikTok and thought, “There’s no way I can do that.” Well, guess what, you totally can! 💅 Get yourself comfy because we’re about to go on a nail journey together—I’m talking fresh cuticles, smooth polish, and nails that’ll have everyone asking, “OMG, where’d you get those done?” And you can be like… “Me!”

First off, let’s get one thing straight—a DIY manicure isn’t rocket science. You don’t need a degree in cosmetology. All you really need are a few simple tools, some bomb polishes (duh), and zero distractions (aka don’t try to paint your nails while binge-watching Netflix—it’s a recipe for disaster 😝). This is me time, okay? So, set your phone aside and let’s get into it.

Step 1: Prepping Your Nails—Because Every Queen Needs a Clean Slate 👑

Before you start slapping on that nail polish, gotta make sure you’re working with a fresh canvas. Just like you wouldn’t put makeup on without washing your face, honey, the same rule applies here.

First thing: remove any old polish. I know, sounds obvious, but trust me, I’ve seen people try 🤦‍♀️. Grab a non-acetone nail polish remover. Non-acetone is less harsh than acetone and won’t dry out your nails so much.

Your nails deserve some love, so make sure to get all the polish off with a cotton pad. Afterward, give your hands a quick wash to get rid of any leftover remover; it’s not your friend when painting.

Step 2: Trim, File, and Shape 🛠

Now it’s time to shape things up! Cute nails always start with good trimming. Use a nail clipper, but don’t go overboard. Just clip any long bits that are too outta control.

After snipping, grab that nail file, queen. You wanna file your nails in one direction to prevent splitting or peeling. Seriously, no sawing back and forth like a maniac. Keep it gentle.

Pro-tip for shaping: Want round, almond, square—what’s your vibe? Pick one. For square nails, file straight across. Oval or almond? Round out the edges. Nail shape is like picking your selfie angle: personal and iconic. 💁‍♀️

Step 3: Take Care of Those Cuticles ✨

Okay, real talk. Having crusty cuticles is a no. Like hard pass. You never want dry or overgrown cuticles ruining your aesthetic. So, get some cuticle remover gel or oil (brands like Sally Hansen do the trick) and rub it around the base of your nails. Let it sit for a minute or two—you gotta let it marinate!

Once your cuticles are soft, use a cuticle pusher to gently push them back. Do not go in too hard here! Messing with your cuticles can make your nails prone to infections, and we’re not about that life.

After pushing them back, carefully snip off any excess with a cuticle trimmer if necessary. And I said carefully! The idea is to keep things looking clean without hurting yourself.

Step 4: Buff It Out, Baby! ✨

Ever see smooth, glossy nails that look amazing even without polish? That’s the power of buffing!

A lot of people skip this step—which is wild to me—but buffing your nails helps get rid of ridges and leaves the surface of your nail nice and smooth. Smooth nails = smooth polish. Buff in gentle strokes for a low-key shine. But don’t go overboard with buffing or you’ll weaken your nails.

Blockquote Moment!

“A little buff goes a long way toward chic, healthy nails.”

TRUTH! Buff, but do it in moderation, ya feel me?

Step 5: Moisturize, Honey! 🧴

After all that pushing and trimming, your hands are begging for moisture, girl. Like, seriously. They need hydration. You can use any hand cream you like, just make sure it’s rich and nourishing. (We stan anything with shea butter or almond oil in it!)

Don’t forget to massage some oil into your cuticles again. Keep those bbs soft and happy. 💕

Step 6: Base Coat—The Unsung Hero ⚡️

If you’re skipping the base coat, we’re not friends anymore. Okay, not really, but why tho?! Listen, applying a base coat is like priming your face before makeup. It protects your nails, smoothes them out, and helps your polish last longer without chipping.

A lot of good base coat brands are out there, but I like using OPI’s Natural Nail Base Coat.

Also, it prevents that annoying yellow staining from darker polishes (you know what I’m talking about 🦶 time to retire those bare toenails all summer long looks).

Let that base coat dry completely. I say give it a minute or two. Paint something on wet nails, and disaster alert 🚨.

Step 7: Color Time—Bring the Pop! 💁‍♀️💅

Now for the fun part! Time to get creative! You can go classic (think nudes or reds) or throw some neon, pastel, or holographic sparkle on your nails. We don’t judge, okay? You do you.

Pro-tip: When applying polish, always do two thin coats instead of one thick coat. It’ll dry better and faster (and who actually enjoys sitting waiting for their nails to dry?!). And we all know that thick polish is more likely to end up with smudges—ew.

When you’re painting, don’t go all the way to your cuticles with the brush. Leave a little gap. That way, it’ll look cleaner and more professional plus it makes it way easier to clean up in the end.

Step 8: Don’t Sleep on Top Coat! ✨💅

If you’ve ever spilled hours on nail art only to ruin it minutes after finishing, blame your lack of top coat. A top coat is your shield against the world.

Swipe on that glossy goodness and make sure you’re covering all the edges of your nails. It prevents chipping and gives your manicure mad shine.

Another top tip: if you want your mani to last longer, reapply your top coat every couple of days. This keeps your nail game strong! 💪

Step 9: Clean Up Your Edges ✂️

Okay, almost done! But we’ve got a lil clean-up on aisle nails! Look, the pros don’t even always keep their polish inside the lines (hi, that’s me 🙋‍♀️). No worries.

Grab an angled brush (like the ones we use for brows—so handy!) or an orange stick dipped in some remover and go around the edges to clean up any stray polish. Voila—it’s like you just got your nails done at the salon.

Step 10: Let It Dry (For Real!) 🤞

Sis, I know it’s tempting to go do something as soon as you finish, but let. it. dry. Seriously, the worst thing you can do is rush this.

Give it at least 10 minutes where you let your nails dry completely. No touching things, no texting rapidly, no moving laundry around… nope! 🙅‍♀️ Just chill and admire your work.
