How to Do Acrylic Nails?

Alright besties, let’s get into it! Acrylic nails are totally iconic, right? It’s like, you’ve just stepped out of a salon with the freshest, sassiest nails ever without having to break the bank! Today, we’re talking about how you can literally give yourself those dreamy acrylic nails at home, Babe. (Yes, at home—your bedroom can be your salon!) I mean, who needs to spend hundreds when you’ve got TikTok tutorials, a steady hand, and some bomb patience?
Okay, but let’s not get it twisted: even though acrylic nails are fab, there’s a bit of work involved. But guess what? I’ll tell you ALL the steps, sprinkle in some product recs, and throw in some of my top tips! Let’s goooo!
What You’ll Need (Because We Stay Prepared 💅)
Before we roll up our sleeves (or push them up ‘cause we’re probably rocking oversized sleeves—it’s a vibe), here’s what you gotta grab first. Trust me, having everything ready will save you from that “Ugh! Where did my nail buffer go?” moment. Been there. Done that. Not fun.
Here’s the tea, babes:
| Item | Why You Need It, Duh |
|---|---|
| Acrylic nail tips | These will give you that extra length (like Rapunzel… but for nails). |
| Nail glue | To stick those bad boys to your natural nails—obvi! |
| Acrylic powder | This is the magic dust that creates a strong, thick nail. |
| Acrylic liquid (monomer) | It mixes with the powder and becomes the acrylic substance you apply. |
| Acrylic brush | ‘Cause how else are you gonna apply the acrylic? The witches aren’t out here waving wands. |
| Nail file | To shape those babies and snatch that cuticle line. |
| Nail primer | Makes your acrylic bond better to your nail, reducing lifting (because nobody wants that!). |
| Buffer | For a super smooth finish. |
| Top coat | Girl, that shine tho. Essential. |
| Dappen dish (little cup for liquids) | You need somewhere to pour the monomer. Don’t be messy, lol! |
Babe, once you’ve got these, we’re ready to slay!
Step 1: Prep Like a Queen 👑
Here’s where people already start messing up. Gurl, you can’t just slap acrylic on top of your nails without prepping. This step is all about making sure the acrylic sticks AND looks cute in the end.
- Remove Any Nail Polish: First thing’s first, if you’ve got some leftover polish from last week’s mani, remove that immediately.
- Push Back Your Cuticles: You don’t want acrylic gooping all over your cuticles unless you’re tryna commit to a mess. Gently push them back; you can use a cuticle pusher or, low-key, even the flat end of a bobby pin if that’s all you have.
- Buff Your Natural Nails: Honestly, you just want a clean, slightly rough surface for the acrylic to grab onto. Buffing makes sure it holds on like your bestie gripping your arm at a horror movie.
- Apply Nail Primer: This is like the makeup primer of your nails! It helps everything stick better and reduces lifting. Don’t skip this if you want your nails to last, sis!
Step 2: Nail Extensions, Where You @?
Okay now we’re getting to the fun parts. You’ll apply the nail tips next. These are gonna give you that length that you can’t get from a growth serum (LOL nah, those never work fast enough).
- Apply the Nail Tips: Pick out the nail tips that fit your actual nail size. Careful, though, select a tip that actually covers the entire nail but doesn’t run over along the sides. Glue that on like there’s no tomorrow—just kidding, don’t go crazy—but definitely enough glue that they won’t pop right off.
- Trim & Shape: Once they’re on, trim them down to your desired length. You wanna go long and dramatic? Cool. Feeling short and practical? Also cool. File them into whatever shape makes your heart happy— coffin, almond, square. Choose your fighter.
Step 3: Time For That Acrylic-smell in the Room 💅😂
We’ve reached the part where magic happens, babes. The acrylic overlay. This part takes some practice but I’ve got faith in you.
- Dip & Swipe: Grab your acrylic brush and dip it into the acrylic liquid (monomer). Tap off any excess (don’t want TOO much liquid) and then dip the brush into the acrylic powder.
If you’ve done it right, you’ll see the powder turn into a lil bead on your brush. Yeah, you’re doing it! - Apply the Bead: Start at the middle of your nail where the natural nail and tip meet. Carefully spread that bead across your nail, gently pushing it. Work the bead upwards before working it down to the tip.
IMPORTANT: Don’t let the acrylic touch your skin! Seriously, it will cause lifting later.
Apply acrylic in thin layers girl, it’s better to build up layers than to have it thick in one go!
- Smooth It Out: As you apply, you’ll want to smooth out any bumps. Having a great brush makes a world of difference here. Keep smoothing until it looks as sleek as an Instagram filter.
Step 4: Make Those Babies SNATCHED 🔥
Once your acrylic has dried down (you’ll know it’s set when tapping it sounds and feels ~solid), it’s time to file those nails into perfection!
- File, Shape, Repeat: Grab your file and go to town shaping your nails until they are exactly how you want them. This is usually when I throw on my fave hype song and just vibe while filing.
Whether (oop there it is—I said it 😉) you want them stiletto, coffin, or square-shaped, now’s your moment to slay the shape game.
- BUFF ‘em Smooth: Use the buffer to make each nail smooth and flawless, girl! You want it smoother than your ex trying to DM you again 😉
Step 5: Paint ‘Em Like Picasso
So now your acrylic is all shaped, filed, and looking cute. But they’re naked and NEED COLOR. Time to give these nails some personality, babes.
- Pick Your Polish: What vibe are you feelin’ today? A classic nude? Bold red? Or maybe something Gen-Z trendy like pastel neons, ugh so cute.
- Apply Top Coat: Don’t forget about that glossy topper! It gives such a pro finish, even if you’re casually doing your nails in your bedroom while watching Netflix.
Step 6: Slay & Care For Those Claws 🐾
Ok, you’re officially acrylic-ed up, babe! But to make sure these acrylics last, you gotta take care of them—no shortcuts here.
- Moisturize Them Cuticles: Please please please don’t forget cuticle oil. Dry cuticles with acrylic nails are NOT it. Everyone has that one bestie who swears by Burt’s Bees Lemon Cuticle Cream. Throw that stuff on every night before bed.
- Careful with the H2O: Don’t soak your nails in water for too long. Seriously, water can get up in there and weaken the bond aka nails popping off.
- Protect Your Nails: Stay away from using your nails as little tools! Don’t go opening pop cans or peeling off labels with them. Be a little gentle—it’ll keep them looking good longer.
Proper care = acrylics that can last 2-3 *weeks* without lifting. You in, right?
Acrylic Nail BTS Problems? I Got You!
Real talk, maybe the first few times your acrylic won’t be perfect and that’s okay. Here’s what to watch out for:
- Lifting: If your acrylics are lifting at the edges, it’s usually ’cause you didn’t prep your nail well or the acrylic is too thick near the cuticle.
- Acrylic Too Thick/Chunky: Spread that stuff out evenly. If it’s too thick in some places, file it down till it’s s-m-o-o-t-h. Like I cannot stress this enough.
- Air Bubbles: Yup, rookie mistake I’ve made! Mix your liquid and powder properly and avoid ‘over-working’ the acrylic.
Acrylics seriously give you THAT energy. You see them, people can tell you got it together—even if your life is low-key chaos LOL. But I promise practicing will get you better with every set you do.
So what are you waiting for? It”ll get lit. So light some candles, put on your favorite jams, pour a lil iced-matcha latte, and turn your desk or vanity into your new nail salon 🔥
