How to Take Acrylic Nails Off?

Okay, so let’s be real for a hot sec: removing acrylic nails at home can feel like a level 100 challenge if you’ve never done it before. But guess what? I’m here to help you through it because this should NOT be stressful, girl! No need to panic or run to the salon every time. Plus, with all the polish remover and nail files you probably already have at home, we can totally get those acrylics off safely without completely wrecking your nail game. 🙌

Let’s get into it.

First, Breathe: Do not, and I mean DO NOT, just rip them off! 🙅

Okay, gotta get this out of the way before we even go any further. Whatever you do, please don’t just start picking or ripping the acrylics off like you’re peeling off an old sticker. I get it—they might be half-lifting or feel annoying, but ripping them will hurt like crazy, and…let’s be real…you’ll end up damaging your nail bed. I mean, we’re not trying to ruin our natural nails in the process, right?

“Take care of your nails—they are your beauty partners for life.”

Now that we’re not going rogue on our nails, let’s do this the right way. Trust me, it’s less painful, way healthier for your nails, and honestly, pretty satisfying once you get the hang of it!

The Good Ol’ Acetone Technique (It’s a classic for a reason)

Alright, if you’ve got acetone (a.k.a., that heavy-duty nail polish remover), you’re golden! This method is lowkey the holy grail approach to removing acrylics. So here’s what you’re gonna need:

Grab These Tools, Babe:

  • 100% pure acetone (not that watered-down stuff)
  • Cotton balls or pads (whichever you prefer)
  • Aluminum foil (cut into little strips)
  • A nail file
  • A buffer
  • Some cuticle oil (because your nails deserve the TLC)
  • A bowl (if you don’t wanna use foil)
  • Patience (lol because this part takes a hot minute)

Step 1: Clip Off Those Acrylics

First things first: trim those acrylics as short as you can. Find some nail clippers and just go for it! The more acrylic you clip off, the easier and faster it’ll be to remove.

Step 2: File Away, Girl

Now, take your nail file and file the top layer of the acrylic. I know it probs sounds like scratching nails on a chalkboard, but this is essential! You wanna roughen up the surface so the acetone can work its magic. Just make sure you’re not filing down your natural nails—only the acrylic layer.

Step 3: Soak, Wrap, Chill

Here comes the fun part. If you’re going with the foil method (which is my personal fave because it’s less messy), here’s what to do:

  1. Soak a cotton ball in acetone until it’s soaked. I’m talking majorly saturated.
  2. Place the cotton ball on your nail.
  3. Wrap a little piece of aluminum foil around your nail so it holds the cotton ball in place.
  4. Do this for all your nails and then, girl, you’re going to want to sit tight for like 15-20 mins.

Pro-tip: Make sure you have Netflix or TikTok loaded because, trust me, this is prime scrolling time! 😂

Step 4: The Big Unveiling

After about 20 minutes, unwrap one nail and see how it’s doing. The acrylic should be all soft and gooey, and you can gently push it off with an orange stick (or even the flat end of your nail file). If it’s not coming off easily, re-wrap and let it soak a little longer. Patience, remember? It’ll be worth it!

Step 5: Buff Like a Boss

Once you’ve got everything off, your nails might look a little ashy (it’s normal, don’t freak!). Use a buffer to smooth out your natural nails bc they probably need some freshening up after all the acetone. You got this, babe.

Step 6: Hydrate Those Nails, Honey! 💅

Your nails have just gone through acetone warfare so they’re gonna be thirsty! Grab your fav cuticle oil and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Honestly, you can even use a thick hand cream or oil if you don’t have cuticle oil—just show your nails some love.

“Moisturizing is the key to stunning nails and hands!”

Pro-tip: If your cuticles are looking a little janky, do not cut them — just push them back gently and keep them hydrated. I promise, healthy cuticles lead to healthy nails. Keep them looking cute and clean!

No Acetone? Here’s What to Do!

Okay, sometimes you might not have acetone lying around the house, which—cool, I get it. So if that’s the case, let’s look at another low-key way of removing acrylics without acetone… but heads up, this takes WAY longer, so maybe order a coffee and vibe while doing it. 😂

What You’ll Need Without Acetone:

  • An electric file or a coarse regular nail file
  • Nail clipper
  • A bowl of really warm water
  • Some dish soap
  • A buffer
  • Cuticle oil (no surprises there, huh?)

Step 1: Clip ‘Em Down Again

Like before, start by clipping your acrylics as short as possible. This step is legit the same, no matter what method you’re using.

Step 2: File, File, File

If you have an electric nail file, this will go quicker, but if not, just use the strongest nail file you have and buff away the acrylic top layer. You’re trying to thin out the acrylic for quicker removal.

Step 3: Dip ‘Em in Soapy Water

Fill a bowl with warm water and a drop (or two) of dish soap. Soak your nails in there for at least 20 to 25 minutes. The warm water helps soften the acrylic while the dish soap kind of weakens the glue.

Step 4: Repeat and Buff Off the Softened Acrylic

After soaking, the acrylic should be a little softer. Take your file and gently chip away at whatever acrylic is left. You might need to do another round of soaking and filing until they’re all gone.

Trying this non-acetone way will take longer, but hey, if you’re out of acetone, you gotta do what you’ve gotta do, am I right?

Final Step: Treat Yo’ Nails!

Once you’ve finally gotten rid of those acrylics, don’t forget the TLC! Moisturize and let your nails breathe for a bit. No joke, your natural nails will need a little “me time” before you go in with another set, polish, or even gels.

“Your hands are fashion statements, too.”

Give them like a week or two of break if possible. Your cuticles and nail beds will thank you later!
