How to Treat Peeling Skin After a Sunburn

Ugh, sunburns! They’re the worst, right? One day you’re living your best life at the beach soaking in that Cali sunshine, and the next you’re peeling like a human snakeskin exhibit. I’m Su by the way, and if you’re dealing with post-sunburn skin that’s peeling off like an old sticker, girl…I know the struggle. But don’t worry! I got you with tons of tips on how to treat peeling skin after a sunburn so you can get back to glowing skin ASAP.
Let’s start with the obvious: peeling skin is weird. It’s basically your body telling you, “Okay, we got a problem here.” You had sunburned, damaged skin and now your body’s trying to heal. But that’s when the madness begins with the peeling and the itching and the burning. Gross and annoying, am I right? So let me drop some skincare knowledge on how to make things, like, 100% better.
So… Why Does Our Skin Even Peel in the First Place?
Okay, quick skincare science lesson (don’t zone out on me; it’s super basic). When you get a sunburn—because sunscreen totally wasn’t enough or maybe you, um, forgot—you’ve damaged the top layer of your skin. It’s literally been burned. Your body’s response? “Let’s protect the new, growing skin underneath by shedding this messed-up layer like it’s a bad ex.” So the top part flakes off so your body can heal underneath with (hopefully) new, healthy skin.
But like… that doesn’t mean you should just sit there looking like a peeled potato. Nope, it’s time to treat that skin! Here’s everything you need to know to get through it.
Step One: Stop Peeling at It! (Seriously, Put Your Hands Away)
I know—it’s kinda impossible not to poke and pull at the peeling bits. But trust me: don’t peel off the skin yourself! Ripping it off may set you up for infection or irritation. Plus, you could take off skin that isn’t ready to peel, which might lead to (drumroll)… scars. And girl, we do NOT need post-sun scars. Instead, try these ideas:
Leave the peeling to happen naturally. Your body knows what it’s doing.
Okay, okay. That sounds like the most boring advice ever, but it’s true. Hands off! If you yank at it, it will just take longer to heal and might get even more inflamed.
Step Two: Cool Down That Skin, Sis
Sunburned skin is like your skin is on fire from within. It’s dry, cranky, and super stressed. So what’s the fix? Calm it down! Some of my go-to ways to cool it off:
- Cool Showers or Baths – Not ice-cold (because brrr) but cooling! Tepid water works too. Even just standing in cool water for a few minutes can make a huge difference.
- Aloe Vera Gel – Look for 100% aloe vera (no funky additives) because this stuff is like healing magic gel. I even pop mine in the fridge before using it; there’s nothing like that icy-cold chill on burned skin. It feels like heaven.
- Hydrocortisone – If your skin’s crazy itchy, grab some over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream and spot-treat the itchy parts. It helps reduce inflammation and itching.
-
Soothing Mists – Keep a facial mist, like rose water or cucumber water, in your bag and spritz when your skin feels mega hot and dry. It’s like mini hydration for your face without extra goop.
Step Three: Moisturize Like Your Skin Depends on It—’Cause It Literally Does
When your skin is peeling from a sunburn, it gets drier than a piece of toast. And dry skin = more peeling. Yikes. So here’s your mission: hydrate and moisturize like a skincare BOSS. Seriously, it’s time to become best friends with thick lotions and creams.
Here’s a cheat sheet for choosing the right one:
| Ingredients to Look For | Why They’re Awesome |
|---|---|
| Hyaluronic Acid | Keeps your skin super hydrated and plumped |
| Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter | Moisture that goes deep and soothes flakiness |
| Squalane | Helps keep oil levels balanced; super hydrating |
| Vitamin E | Helps to repair and strengthen skin |
| Aloe Vera | Soothes irritation and adds moisture |
| Ceramides | Restores skin’s natural barrier and locks in moisture |
Pro tip: Apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp, like right after your shower, so it can, uh, trap that hydration.
Avoid the traps though! Skip products with any alcohol or strong fragrances—they’ll dry out your skin even more, and that’s sooo not what we’re going for.
Step Four: Drink More Than Just Iced Coffees
Dehydration alert! 🔔 If your skin is peeling from a sunburn, your body’s also thirsty. So while guzzling iced lattes and boba are super cute, you also need some good ol’ H2O. Drinking water will help keep your skin hydrated from the inside out and speed up the healing process.
Pro tip: You can also add in some coconut water, cucumbers, or watermelon to your diet for an extra hydration boost. These foods have a ton of water content and are like nature’s cute little moisturizers.
Step Five: Gentle Exfoliation = Your New BFF
So I know I told you not to peel your skin off — but that doesn’t mean you can’t, like, gently exfoliate, okay? You just gotta be super careful. When the peeling starts and you’re beginning to look flaky, use a gentle exfoliant to slough off some of those dead flakes.
Things to keep in mind:
- No rough scrubs! Be very gentle. We’re talking soft as a kitten.
- Use a soft washcloth or find a no-scratch exfoliant with soothing ingredients like oatmeal or sugar.
- Don’t scrub too often; do it, like, once or twice a week max to avoid irritating your skin.
Patience is key when you’re exfoliating post-sunburn. It’s about getting rid of dead skin, not irritating the new skin underneath.
Step Six: Protect Your Skin (Again!)
Alright, now that your sunburn’s healing, I know you’re not about to go roast your skin again. But just in case you’re tempted by the sun, here’s your reminder to slather on that sunscreen every. single. day.
SPF is your skin’s best friend and the ultimate protector moving forward from a sunburn.
Make sure you’re using at least SPF 30, and reapply it every 2 hours, especially if you’re gonna be back in the sun. And don’t just, like, do your face! Hit those uncovered shoulders, arms, and anywhere else that’s exposed. Wear your sunscreen religiously so you won’t end up peeling again next week.
Step Seven: Overtime TLC for Skin That’s Extra Hurting
Sometimes after a bad burn, your skin needs a little more love. If your sunburn is giving you blisters or feels too painful to touch, that’s a sign you need super sensitive treatment. The key is to keep things cool, gentle, and healing. Skip any overly harsh skincare routines, and focus on:
- Applying calendula ointment or coconut oil to moisturize and speed up recovery.
- Using cold compresses to reduce the heat. Just soak a clean cloth in cold water, and press it to your skin gently.
- Sleeping with a chilled soft cotton sheet over your skin—light pressure, nothing scratchy!
PSA: Avoid These Skincare Mistakes Post-Sunburn
Let me throw out a few What NOT to Do moves because, trust me, I’ve learned the hard way so you don’t have to:
- No hot showers (you’ll turn into a lobster).
- Don’t apply super thick makeup foundations over peeling skin—let it breathe until it’s better.
- Don’t use scrubs with big particles. They might irritate your fragile skin.
- Avoid tight clothing—it’ll rub against peeling patches and just make your skin angrier. Stick to loose, soft fabrics until your skin stops being mad.
The Glow-Up Is Coming
Ok babes, at this point, you’re practically ready to walk back out in the sun—nicely protected with no more peeling skin, of course. 😉 The key here is patience, lots of soothing, and always being obsessed with sunscreen. Once the peeling stops, you’ll be glowing again before you know it.
Just take care of that delicate new skin, moisturize until you’re practically dewy, and stay hydrated. Oh, and don’t forget your cute sunhat for extra protection. Stay safe out there, and have the best sunburn-free summer ever!
