Sunburn SOS: Quick Remedies to Soothe Your Skin

Okay so… you fell asleep “for just ten minutes” on the beach, and woke up looking like a lobster. Been there. Don’t panic, you’re not doomed to peel and suffer for the next week. Let’s talk about what you can do right now (yes, right now) to chill that burn and stop your skin from stressing out more than it already is.

First of all: you didn’t deserve this. Sure, maybe sunscreen slipped your mind (or just sweat off), but hey, the sun can be sneaky. And sometimes it’s cloudy and you’re like, “I’m fine,” and then BAM ;  crispy shoulders. Let’s get into how to cool things down, literally.

Stop the Burn in Its Tracks

Okay, I know it sounds obvious, but seriously: get out of the sun. Like immediately. If you’re still at the beach, find shade. Hoodie up, towel over the shoulders, whatever you gotta do. Continuing to soak sun right now is just adding insult to injury.

Next up: cool down your skin. And I don’t mean “stand in front of a fan and hope for the best.” I mean cold compresses, short cool showers (not freezing, you’re not trying to punish yourself), or even a bath with baking soda or oatmeal if you’re fancy like that.

Sunburns can keep cooking your skin even after you’re out of the sun, so cooling things off ASAP can seriously help limit the damage.

Avoid soap if you can help it. It can dry skin out when you REALLY don’t need that added chaos.

Cold Compress 101

Soak a clean washcloth in super cold water, squeeze it out a bit, and lay it right over the burn for 15 to 20 minutes. Re-do as needed. You’ll feel a little like you’re icing cookies, but it helps.

You can also plunk some crushed ice into a ziplock wrapped in a soft tee (never put ice directly on skin ;  that’s asking for more damage, which is def not the goal). Pat that gently across the burn for fast relief.

Hydration is Not Optional

You know those TikToks where people lug gallon jugs of water around all day? Today, you are those people.

Sunburns pull moisture out of your skin AND your body. So if you’re suddenly feeling dry, dizzy, or like your skin’s the Sahara… it’s not your imagination.

Drink water. Like, a lot of it. Add some electrolytes if you can. Coconut water also slaps here, btw.

Also, your skin needs water on it, too. I love a spritz bottle for this ;  just fill it with cool water and refrigerate it. Then mist away like you’re at a dewy Glossier shoot in the rainforest. Feels dreamy.

Hydrated skin heals faster and hurts a lot less, so start chugging and spritzing like it’s your job.

Aloe is the MVP

You’ve probably heard this one before, but aloe vera is like the Beyoncé of sunburn care. It works. It soothes. It’s not just hype.

Here’s the thing: not all aloe gels are golden. Look at the ingredients label. If aloe isn’t first on the list, or there’s fragrance, put it back. Your skin’s already on fire. No need to add drama.

Pro tip: keep it in the fridge. Nothing feels better than cold aloe on hot skin.

My top pick? I like the Fruit of the Earth 100% Aloe Vera Gel. It’s cheap, clean, and actually works.

Oh, and if you have a real aloe plant at home? Slice one of the leaves open lengthwise and scoop out the goo. That’s skincare straight from the source.

Skip the Tight Clothes

That bodycon dress you had planned for tonight? Yeah, maybe not today.

Loose, soft cotton clothes are where it’s at. Think oversized tees, flowy rompers, maybe even an excuse to live in your fluffiest robe for a bit. Let your skin breathe.

Also: no sports bras if your burn is anywhere around your straps. Just; no. Not today.

Try These Kitchen Fixes

Okay, hear me out: your fridge is low-key your first aid kit right now.

Here’s a quick table of chill (literally) remedies you can probably put together in a minute:

Ingredient What to Do Why It Helps
Cucumber slices Blend, apply cold puree to skin Reduces inflammation, ultra-cooling
Plain yogurt Slather on, rinse gently after 15 minutes Soothes and helps balance skin
Milk + water compress Soak cloth in cold half-milk, half-water solution Proteins calm irritation
Honey Dab on in thin layer, let sit for 20 mins Antibacterial and helps with healing
Oatmeal bath Add oats to cheesecloth and steep in bath Calms itchiness and redness

Honestly, cucumbers are like spa day vibes for burns. Keep those cold and rotate on hot spots like you’re making face sushi.

What Not to Do (Seriously, Don’t)

Let’s just clear a few things up real quick. These are common mistakes people make that actually make burns worse. Been guilty myself once or twice.

  • Do not put Vaseline or heavy creams on a fresh sunburn. They trap heat in. Think suffocating your skin with cling film. Not cute.
  • Don’t pop any blisters. If those show up, just chill. Your body’s trying to heal. Popping = infection risk.
  • Avoid loofahs, exfoliants, or scrubs. Even if your brain’s like, “Get this damaged skin off me,” not yet. You’ll just make it worse.
  • No hot showers. No matter how relaxing they sound. Hot water = more inflammation. Stick to lukewarm or cool temperature.
  • Don’t put perfume or alcohol-based stuff on or near burnt skin. Stings like betrayal, and causes more dryness.

If it burns, stings, or leaves your skin feeling tight or itchy, skip it. Now’s the time to pamper, not punish.

Keep It Soothed at Night

Weird tip but trust: sleep with a fan near your bed. The air movement keeps you from getting that sweaty, sticky feeling that makes burns worse.

Also: elevate the burnt part of your body a little if possible. Swollen shoulders or feet? Pillow under ’em. You’ll wake up a little less puffy.

I keep a spray bottle with cold water and a bit of aloe by the bed and give myself a mist if I wake up feeling spicy.

The Fade: Helping the Skin Heal Smoothly

Once the immediate panic is over, your new goal: prevent peeling and breakouts.

A few days in, you might think, “Okay but can I get my glow back now?” Yes. Slowly.

This is the point where I start sneaking in a super gentle moisturizer ;  like CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion or the Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel. You want something light, non-comedogenic, and hydrating. Oils like jojoba or squalane can also be helpful once you’re past the crispy phase.

Hydration and patience are your besties for letting skin heal without a major peel-fest.

Now is also a great time to ease back in with SPF. I like the La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Fluid. It’s light, layers well, and doesn’t sting even a little ;  which is key if your face is still tender.

Should You See a Doctor?

Okay, I don’t say this lightly… but sometimes things go past DIY.

If you start feeling feverish, get chills, or your burn covers a massive part of your body, don’t just vibe it out. Blisters that turn weird colors? Definitely call a pro.

Also if the pain is unbearable or you’re feeling dizzy or seriously off ;  it’s worth checking in to get ahead of anything serious.

“The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” ;  John F. Kennedy

This quote hits kinda different when you’re sunburned but also true the next time you’re beach-bound.

Prevent It Next Time (Your Skin Will Thank You)

We’ll keep it real: the actual best treatment for sunburn is sunscreen + common sense the day before.

Quick list to not get wrecked next time:

  • Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes, not 4 hours later when you’re “tanning”
  • Go for mineral-based SPF for sensitive skin (zinc oxide is your friend)
  • Wear sun-protective clothing, even if it’s just a light cover-up
  • Don’t trust clouds. Seriously. They do not block UV.
  • Treat SPF 30 as a starting point, not the goal. Higher is better if you’re outdoors

I like Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen and EltaMD’s Clear SPF 46 ;  they don’t clog pores and go great under makeup.

TLDR: Burned? You Got This

Don’t beat yourself up over a little overexposure. It happens to literally everyone. What matters now is being kind to your skin while it heals. Go gently. Keep things cool and hydrated. Ice, aloe, water, repeat.

And next time you’re laying in the sun thinking, “eh, I’ll reapply later”… maybe remember this post and reapply now. Future you will appreciate it.

Now go grab some aloe, drink some water, find a big floppy hat, and let your skin chill.

Stay glowing, safely.

Love,
Su 💕
