Sunscreen Ingredients: What to Look For and Avoid

Sunscreen is literally summer’s BFF… but honestly, it should be your BFF all year round. Like, no joke, I never leave the house without it, no matter the season. But here’s the catch: not all sunscreens are created equal. Some are fab for your skin, others, well, not so much. So, what’s the deal with sunscreen ingredients? What should you be looking for? And more importantly, what should you run away from like they’re a bad plot twist in your favorite Netflix series? Buckle up, because we’re about to spill the tea on what’s slathering-worthy and what’s… nah.
Let’s Start With the Good Stuff: The Ingredients You Want
1. Zinc Oxide (aka your skin’s superhero)
First up, say hello to zinc oxide. This is the MVP of sunscreen ingredients. It’s a mineral sunscreen, which means it sits on top of your skin and reflects those pesky UVA and UVB rays. Basically, it’s like tossing on your fave oversized hoodie; comforting and protective, but light enough not to be annoying. Plus! Zinc oxide is super gentle, so if you’ve got sensitive skin (shout out to fellow eczema peeps or anyone who turns red easily), this is your bestie.
Zinc oxide = no white cast AND your face is still ready for selfies!
2. Titanium Dioxide: The Sidekick
If zinc oxide is the main character, titanium dioxide is the reliable sidekick; it’s another mineral sunscreen that does a bang-up job of blocking UVB rays. It’s gentle like zinc and works great for people with sensitive skin. The best part? These two can often be found teamed up in a bunch of products. You might not even notice them working their magic…until you don’t get burnt. Isn’t that the dream?
3. Antioxidants (Vitamin C & Vitamin E)
Okay, let’s talk double protection. Antioxidants are the smooth-talking wingmen of your sunscreen ingredients. Vitamin C and Vitamin E are the GOATs here! These vitamins help neutralize free radicals which can damage your collagen game and leave you with fine lines (gasp!). Antioxidants help repair the damage caused by UV exposure and give your skin a glow. So you’re not just protected; you’re thriving.
Chemical Filters: Good or Bad? Depends…
Chemical sunscreens are a bit more complicated. They absorb into your skin and turn sunlight into heat to bounce it away. So, it kinda works differently from mineral sunscreens, which just block stuff right on the skin’s surface.
1. Avobenzone
Avobenzone is basically the dream chemical-filter ingredient for all-around broad-spectrum coverage (both UVA and UVB rays). It’s a bit of a lone wolf; it’s strong but tends to break down under sunlight. So, most sunscreens will buddy it up with other ingredients to keep it stable. Still, it’s a solid choice and doesn’t usually cause irritation.
2. Mexoryl SX and XL
These two sound like some kind of tech gadgets from a sci-fi movie, but they’re actually top-tier chemical filters! What’s great about Mexoryl is it’s super stable and really efficient at fighting UV rays. It’s a little harder to find, because they’re often in European or fancy skincare sunscreens, but if you can get your hands on it; girl, snag it.
3. Tinosorb S and Tinosorb M
Tinosorbs are sorta the new kids on the block in the sunscreen world, but YAAAAS, they are doing work! These guys block both UVA and UVB and are super stable. Plus, they’re not absorbed by the skin as much, which is better for sensitive skin or people who break out easily.
Now For the Icky Stuff: What to Avoid
1. Oxybenzone (The Bad Guy)
Public enemy number ONE on our sunscreen blacklist. Oxybenzone makes its way into a lot of chemical sunscreens, but bad news: it’s a hormone disruptor. Basically, it can mess with your body on a cellular level, and no, we do not support that! It’s harmful to the environment too, especially coral reefs (which are struggling already; pour one out for the reefs). So do your skin (and the oceans) a favor and skip anything with oxybenzone in it.
If it’s reef-safe and oxybenzone-free, you’re golden!
2. Octinoxate and Octocrylene
These two are kinda like oxybenzone’s annoying little cousins. They’re also found in lots of chemical sunscreens, but they aren’t great for your skin health or the environment. Octinoxate has been known to cause skin irritation, and both ingredients hang around in your system longer than you’d like, which is all sorts of sketchy. Keep an eye out, because these guys like to sneak into formulas!
3. Homosalate
Here’s another cheeky villain sneaking into your sunscreen! Homosalate is meh at best as a UV filter, and worse yet, it can build up in your body faster than your fave TikTok getting likes. It’s also been linked to hormone disruption. So, nope. We don’t recommend it here. You’re way better off sticking with mineral filters or safer chemicals.
4. Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A derivative)
Now, hear me out! We LOVE Vitamin A for anti-aging, but not in your sunscreen. Retinyl palmitate is a sneaky little frenemy. When you mix this ingredient with sun exposure, there’s a chance it can actually increase the risk of skin cancer. Not cool. Stick to your serums and nighttime skincare routines for this ingredient. It’s meant to work when the sun is down, boo.
The Tale of SPF; Is Higher Always Better?
Soooo honestly, you might be thinking, “I’ll just grab whatever’s got the highest SPF at Target and call it a day, right?” WRONG! 😬 SPF (which stands for Sun Protection Factor, btw) only measures UVB protection. That means your SPF 100 sunscreen might not be protecting you from those sneaky UVA rays that cause deep skin damage and premature aging. Yikes.
For day-to-day, an SPF 30 or 50? Totally chill. It’s gonna give you about 97% – 98% of protection. The jump from SPF 50 to SPF 100 adds like, 1 measly percent. So like, don’t sweat it too much over high numbers. What’s more important is reapplying and going for broad-spectrum coverage (protecting you from both UVA and UVB rays).
Pro Tip: If you’re in for a beach day or running around all sweaty, water-resistant SPF is key! Those regular sunscreens are just gonna slide off like a poorly applied highlighter, and sis… you don’t want that.
| SPF Value | UVB Protection |
|---|---|
| SPF 15 | 93% |
| SPF 30 | 97% |
| SPF 50 | 98% |
| SPF 100 | 99% |
Sunscreen Settings to Almost NEVER Skip
Alright fam, you’re all caught up on ingredients; but let’s talk application. Cause literally nothing makes me cringe harder than seeing people use sunscreen like it’s perfume (like just a spritz and done). Sunscreen is not the product to be stingy with!
- If you’re using a face sunscreen, go with a nickel-sized amount.
- For your body, a shot glass-sized amount should do the trick.
- Don’t forget your ears, neck, chest, and hands. These are all places that age ridiculously fast from sun exposure.
Also, pro tip for makeup junkies: setting sprays with SPF are a game changer! You can reapply sunscreen without messing up your contour. I love keeping it in my bag, and boom! It makes sticking to that “reapply every 2 hours” rule way easier.
One last thing: did you know you can still get UV damage indoors and from blue light (like from your phone or computer screen)? Yeah, it’s wild. Sunscreen really is the daily essential we didn’t know we needed… until now.

The Final Swipe
Sunscreen doesn’t just save your skin from burns; it’s literally helping you age like fine wine. And yeah, it can feel hella intimidating to try and figure out like, which ingredients are worth your time and which ones are just there to mess with your glow-up. But trust me; stick to the good ingredients (hi, zinc oxide!) and ditch the sketchy stuff (bye, oxybenzone!), and your skin’s gonna be living its best life. 🌞
But seriously, stay safe in the sun, stunners!
