Finding Your Perfect Foundation Shade

Let’s just be real: finding your perfect foundation shade is literally one of the most frustrating parts of makeup. Like, how can something that seems so basic be so…confusing? I’ve been doing makeup since high school and even now, there are days where I swatch three shades on my jaw and they all look wrong. UGH. But don’t worry, I’ve got you.
I’m Su, your slightly chaotic, coffee-loving makeup artist from Huntington Beach. And today, we’re gonna get this whole foundation shade mess sorted out. Not perfectly, maybe. But a lot closer to perfection than where you started. Pinky promise.
First, let’s talk undertones (yes, they matter more than you think)
This part gets skipped over sooo often. Like, people go staring at foundation shades in stores for hours and forget to ask the most important question: “What’s my undertone?”
Foundation that matches your undertone will look like it *melts* into your skin. No blending needed. It just vanishes. That’s when you know you’ve found it.
Okay, so here’s the quick breakdown:
| Undertone | How to Know | Celeb Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Warm | Gold jewelry looks better, veins look green-ish | Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez |
| Cool | Silver jewelry pops on you, veins look blue/purple | Anne Hathaway, Lucy Liu |
| Neutral | Literally both gold and silver look good | Selena Gomez, Zendaya |
If you’re not screaming “YEAH OMG that’s me” after looking at the chart, don’t stress out. A ton of us are neutral or close enough that we can fudge it with other shades.
Try holding a white T-shirt or towel near your face in natural light. If your skin looks kinda yellow or golden, you’re warm. If it pulls pink or reddish, you’re cool. If you’re sitting there going, “Uhhh…it just looks like skin??” then you’re likely neutral.
Let’s do the jawline test already
I know it’s tempting to swatch on your hand or wrist (guilty), but seriously, your face and hand are hardly ever the same color. The real MVP here? Your jawline.
Grab your potential shades and swatch like 2 or 3 stripes along your jawline and down your neck just a lil bit. The one that disappears is usually your match.
And please, do this in natural daylight. Not Sephora lighting. Not your bathroom’s weird yellow bulb. Go stand by a window or even step outside quickly if you can.
Also: wait a few minutes before making your final decision. Foundations oxidize. Aka they darken a teeny bit after sitting on your skin. Especially if you’ve got oily skin.
Finish matters more than you think
Lots of people stop at the shade part and forget the second most important detail: finish. Let me break it down real quick.
| Foundation Finish | Best For | Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Matte | Oily skin or humid days | Snatched filter IRL |
| Dewy | Dry skin or dull complexions | Glowy girl energy |
| Satin/Natural | Combo skin or everyday beat | Like skin, but better |
So if you’re wondering why your foundation looks cakey even though the shade is right, it might be the wrong formula for your skin type. A matte foundation on dry skin is like…flaky croissant face. Dewy on oily might turn you into a greaseball by lunch.
Shade can only take you so far. The wrong finish can ruin even the best match.
Drugstore vs High-End: Is the splurge worth it?
Hot take: not always. Honestly, so many drugstore foundations hit hard these days. Some of my favorites live at Target.
Here’s a quick list of foundations by budget and why I love them:
Drugstore faves:
- Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless: Super blendable and like $8. Great for oily to combo skin.
- L’Oréal True Match: No joke, has like one of the widest shade ranges out there. Neutral friendly.
- e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter: Not technically a foundation, but can be mixed into anything to make it look dewier.
High-end queens:
- NARS Natural Radiant Longwear: Medium to full coverage with a skin-like finish. Super long-lasting.
- Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte: Rihanna really understood the assignment. Great range and awesome for oily girls.
- Armani Luminous Silk: Seriously feels like nothing on your face. Pricey, yes. Worth it? Also yes, for special events especially.
Mixing shades is allowed (and honestly kinda genius)
If you’re stuck between two shades and neither one is totally right, don’t be afraid to mix them.
Lots of pro makeup artists do this all the time. Skin isn’t one flat color. Like, your forehead might be warmer than your cheek area. Totally normal.
Sometimes I mix in a little bit of a warmer foundation when I’ve been in the sun more. In winter, I grab the one that leans more neutral. It’s like having a little foundation wardrobe.
You don’t need one foundation for life. You need one (or two) for *right now*.
What about oxidizing? (a.k.a. Why did my face get darker?!)
Haha, yeah. Let’s talk about this annoying magical curse.
Some foundations oxidize on your skin. That just means they react to air and your natural oils after application and end up darker or even more orange looking.
Usually, it’s worse if the foundation has a ton of pigment or if your skincare routine makes it react weirdly.
A couple tips to avoid the oxidization drama:
– Swatch and then wait 5–10 minutes before judging the match.
– Use a mattifying primer if you’re oily. It’ll slow down the oxidation effect.
– Mix a lighter foundation in if you already know your go-to turns a bit dark.
Test in different lighting
This one’s huge. Your makeup might look bomb in your bathroom, but then flat-out weird in a selfie or under office lights.
Test your foundation in:
– Natural daylight by a window
– Your bathroom mirror
– Car mirror (classic)
– Phone selfie camera
If it looks amazing in all four: chef’s kiss. You’ve nailed it.
Summer face vs winter face: Don’t get caught slipping
Skin tone shifts slightly during different seasons. If you’re out in the sun a lot (shoutout to all my beach babes), you probably get a little warmer and deeper over summer.
It’s smart to keep two shades handy:
– One lighter for winter months or when you’re indoors all the time.
– Another a touch darker or warmer to match your summer glow.
Tbh, I keep three or four in my client kit for this reason. Skin doesn’t live in one shade year round.
Online shopping hack: Use shade finders and real reviews
If you can’t hit the store or are just lazy (same), online shade matching gets better when you use tools.
Try this:
– Findation.com: Plug in your current foundation and it’ll match you to others.
– Sephora’s shade finder: Actually pretty solid when combined with user photos.
– YouTube reviews or TikToks: I love watching people with similar skin tone try it on before I commit.
Don’t trust the model swatches on the website. They always lie. Trust real faces with bad lighting and honest opinions.
Foundation isn’t a mask; it’s a filter
Okay here’s the thing nobody talks about enough: your foundation doesn’t have to perfectly match. It just needs to blend smoothly into your skin without looking off.
If that means using a slightly warmer tone and then balancing it with concealer or bronzer, totally fine.
Don’t stress perfection. Makeup is flexible. You work with what you’ve got.
“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself” ; Coco Chanel
And that includes wearing foundation that makes you feel like your best self. Even if it’s a bit warmer, cooler, glowier, or no foundation at all. It’s your face!
Some real talk before we wrap things up
Look, finding your “perfect” foundation shade feels hard sometimes because it kind of is. Brand formulas are inconsistent. Lighting is tricky. Skin changes over time. None of that is your fault.
Try to experiment on chill days. Practice matching at home. Swatch in strange places. Ask friends their opinions. Or don’t, if you’re tired. Foundation shouldn’t stress you out.
Honestly? I don’t even believe there’s just one perfect shade. There’s a best-for-today shade. And that’s more than good enough.
So go swipe some samples. Blend away. And if you walk around with a slightly mismatched cheek one day? LOL, who cares. You’re still slaying.
Until next time, keep blending, keep glowing, and stay comfy in your skin.
Love,
Su 🌞
