Makeup Routine for Combination Skin Types

Oh hey, gorgeous! Let’s talk about something seriously important: makeup for combo skin. I know, I know – combination skin, the struggle is real. You’re shiny in your T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) but dry around the edges of your face? It’s like your skin’s got a whole vibe going on, and not in a cute way sometimes. 🤦‍♀️ But, don’t worry. I have a routine that gets you and your fabulously two-worlds-in-one skin type.

Grab a snack (or like, an iced coffee if you’re extra) and let’s dive into a step-by-step everyday makeup routine for combination skin. You’re gonna walk out of here looking dewy in the right places and matte where you want.

Step 1: Prepping Your Skin – ‘Cause We Don’t Skip Skincare!

Legit, the way you hydrate and prime your skin is more important than the makeup you put on top. WHY? Combo skin needs both hydration and oil control at the same time. It’s like skin gymnastics.

  1. Cleanser: Use a gentle, balancing cleanser that won’t strip your skin’s natural oils but still gives you that “ahhhh” clean feel. Foamy gel cleansers work wonders without being harsh. My personal fav? The CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. Affordable and gets the job done. 🙌
  2. Toner: Straight up—toner is underrated. It helps balance your skin’s pH. Look for something with no alcohol (trust me) and keeps your face feeling fresh without drying the heck out of it.
Try Thayers Witch Hazel – it’s an icon for a reason.
  3. Moisturizer: Combo skin can be tricky. You need lightweight hydration for your dryer areas but nothing too thick for where you tend to get oily. A gel-based moisturizer like Neutrogena Hydro Boost is literally like giving your skin the perfect amount of love without making it feel heavy or greasy.

  4. Sunscreen: ALWAYS finish your skincare with sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Trust me, your skin will thank you later. Look for a mattifying sunscreen like La Roche-Posay Anthelios. It’s non-greasy and has SPF, which honestly should be non-negotiable. 😎

Sunscreen every day. Future you will be hyped you did.

Step 2: Prime Time ⏳

Now, let’s talk primer! You need to mix things up—literally. Go in with a mattifying primer if your forehead and nose get oily, but use a hydrating primer on your drier cheek and jaw areas. It’s like giving different parts of your face their own personal VIP treatment. You’re fancy, so it makes sense, lol. 😂

I love using two specific primers:
Smashbox Photo Finish Mattifying Primer for your T-zone
Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer for your drier parts

Step 3: Foundation – The Right Formula is Everything 🌟

Okay, time to paint the canvas! Combo skin needs a foundation that doesn’t go too dewy or too matte. That sounds impossible, but NOPE. Trust. The beauty industry knew combo skin people are out here struggling—so we finally got formulas that cater to both.

My go-to is a lightweight, buildable, and demi-matte (kinda in-betweeny) foundation. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation is the MOVE. Rihanna knew what she was doing when she made this. If you want something lighter, a skin tint works too, like Glossier Skin Tint for a more casual “I woke up like this” vibe.

And don’t forget to use a beauty sponge like a damp Beautyblender for that flawless blend!

Step 4: Concealer – Hide the Zits 🕵️‍♀️

If you’re still guessing where half your face is oily and the other is like the Sahara desert, just WAIT ‘til the concealer rules your life. 😅 You need one that’s hydrating for under your eyes (because…dark circles 👀) and one that’s a bit tackier for areas like your forehead to control oil.

For your undereyes, snag the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (it’s hydrating and never ages your undereyes). For the spots and T-zone? The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer ain’t playing around—it stays PUT. 😮‍💨

Step 5: Setting Your Base – Oil Control Baby! 🧪

Now y’all know a setting powder is KEY, especially for combo skin. We love looking glowy, but like, controlled glow—not “I made out with a tub of Vaseline” kinda shine (yikes, no one wants that). Set your T-zone with a translucent powder (just a lil).

A loose powder like Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder will set without making you look cake-y. But keep Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Powder within reach for those touch-ups during the day. You feel me?

Pro tip: Use a smaller brush for applying powder, so you’re controlling where you set! Don’t powder your whole face to death – you’re not a mannequin! ✌️

Step 6: Brows, Brows, Brows! 🖊️

Girl, your brows can make (or like, ruin) your whole look, so we want to keep ‘em snatched while still looking kinda understated. You’re an everyday queen, after all.

For a “fluffy but still clean” brow, use a tinted brow gel (like Benefit Gimme Brow): It adds volume without feeling like you just drew caterpillars on your face. Or, if you’re more into brow pencils for control, Anastasia Brow Wiz is the OG. Micro-pencil vibes never fail.

Step 7: Eye Time – Keep It Fresh 👁️✨

Alright, for an everyday vibe, stick to something fresh and quick (we all overslept at some point, amirite?). Pick a few neutral shadows and get on with your day! A warm matte brown in the crease and light shimmer on the lid? You’re golden. It’s simple but effective.

One of my BFFs in the palette world is the Tartelette In Bloom Palette. Perfect mix of neutrals and mattes—it’s like your one-stop shop for creating an annoyingly cute eye look.

Oh, oh! And don’t forget—the Urban Decay Primer Potion will lock that eyeshadow in place, so you don’t end up with “panda eyes” by 3 PM.

Mascara pleaseeee: Waterproof. Combo skin means oil on the lid as the day goes on, which means mascara smudges ALL the time if it’s not waterproof. 😑 Try Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara (an absolute drugstore gem).

Step 8: Contour? Subtle, Babe 💁‍♀️

Now, contouring is very optional (especially for everyday makeup), but I personally love a lil cheekbone action for the day! For combo skin? Use a powder contour. Cream contour can slide right off your oily zones by noon.

Go for Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth bronzer. Natural, buildable, and gawwgeous. Throw some onto the hollow of your cheeks, hairline, and soft touch on your jawline.

Step 9: Blush – GLOW Up!

You need blush to be your BFF for that “I just drank 10 cups of water” healthy glow. Stay away from anything too shimmery that’ll sit in oily areas; blush should look lit-from-within, not like you’re a disco ball.

Powder blush works best for balancing out oils, and my forever fav is Milani’s Baked Blush in Luminoso. Don’t @ me—it’s iconic. 🧡

Step 10: Highlight? Duh! 🌟

Now, instead of looking greasy, we’re gonna make sure that glow is intentional. Keep the highlight on the high points: cheekbones, tip of nose, and Cupid’s bow ONLY. Avoid your oily zones at ALL COSTS.

For an everyday glow, go with a buildable powdered highlight like MAC Soft & Gentle. It’s soft but stunning, and you won’t look shiny in your T-zone: win-win.

A controlled glow = dewy queen

Step 11: Lips – Keep It Simple 💋

Finally…lips! Keep it simple and moisturized. You wanna look natural during the day, so stick with tinted lip balms or soft glosses. Glossier Balm Dotcom is such a cute option.

For gloss lovers, Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow? It’s like the lip gloss of the century, and you’ll be obsessed.

Step 12: Set EVERYTHING – ‘Cause You Worked Hard 🎯

YOU. NEED. A. SETTING. SPRAY. Combo skin can wear down your makeup quick! Grab a setting spray MADE for extending your look. Get yourself one that controls oil but also doesn’t suck you dry, babes.

The Urban Decay All Nighter is the GOAT. Like, this stuff is glued onto your face (but in a chic way, y’know!).

YOU MADE IT 🎉! And there you have it, my everyday makeup routine for combination skin types! You’ll leave looking fire, hydrated, and perfectly matte + dewy (it’s a whole vibe, trust me).
