Smokey Eye Tutorial with Fall Colors

Y’all, it’s fall! 🍂 And you know what that means? It’s time to break out the cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice everything, and of course, some seriously fab fall makeup looks. Today, I’m serving up a bold yet cozy smokey eye tutorial — perfect for that autumn vibe, but with a little more oomph since we’re playing with rich, warm fall colors. Trust me, you’re gonna feel like a walking autumn goddess by the end of this tutorial. 🔥
Let’s go ahead and jump right in, because this look? You’ll probably want to wear it everywhere. 🍁🍂 You’ve been warned!
Step 1: The Base — Prep Your Lids
Okay, before we start swiping on those fabulous fall colors, we gotta make sure our foundation (no, not that kind) is solid. If your lids tend to get a little oily like mine sometimes do, a good eyeshadow primer is key! It helps keep everything in place without creasing.
If you don’t have an eyeshadow primer handy, no worries. A little bit of concealer with some translucent powder on top will definitely do the trick. But don’t skip this step because it makes a HUGE difference!
A solid base keeps your masterpiece from smudging.

Swap shoes for eyeshadow and same vibes tbh. ✨
Step 2: The Transition Shade — Warm It Up 🍂
Alright, the first thing we’re gonna do is lay down a transition color. This shade keeps everything blended and smooth, sorta like the unsung hero of your eye look. You want a warm-toned shade for that autumn-y, cozy vibe. Think, something like a soft burnt orange or a light caramel brown!
Take a fluffy blending brush, and sweep it right into your crease. It doesn’t need to be super precise. Really focus on blending it upwards and outwards—like you’re giving your crease a little warm blanket for all the goodness we’re about to lay on top of it.
Tip: Use window wiper motions for the smoothest blend. Just imagine wiping a foggy car window…only, with more glam. 🚘✨
Step 3: Let’s Smoke It Out — Start with a Deep Shade 🔥
Here’s where the magic happens! Grab a darker matte shade: a deep chocolate brown, maroon, or even a dark burgundy (a total fall mood). I’m obsessed with using burgundy for this time of the year, but honestly, all three choices slap.
Using a smaller blending brush, pop that dark shade into the outer corner of your eye, focusing close to your lash line. Then, blend that bad boy up and into your crease, just below the transition shade, but not too high. We still want that fade like we’re transitioning into sweater weather. 😉
If it’s looking a lil’ too harsh, go back with your transition color and lightly blend the top edges of the smokey color to soften it up a bit. Fall is all about softness, but with some attitude, right?
Blending is EVERYTHING — take your time with it!
Step 4: Pop of Shimmer — Spice It Up
What’s a fall smokey eye without a little shimmer? 🍁 Now, pick up a shimmery copper or a golden bronze shadow with a flat shader brush and pack it onto the center of your lid. It’s gonna catch the light just right and bring that drama we all crave.
If you want the shimmer to REALLY pop (like, festival-level pop), spritz your brush lightly with a setting spray before dipping into the shadow. It makes that shimmer look metallic and just so ✨ luxe ✨.
And don’t be afraid to mix shimmers either! I sometimes use a bit of gold in the inner third and copper in the center to create a gradient of shimmery goodness. That way, the look gives layers and dimension, which basically translates to “I’m lookin’ fab from every angle.”
Step 5: Lower Lash Line — Smoke It Out Again
We can’t forget the lower lash line! This step is essential for really pulling the whole smokey eye vibe together. Take that same dark brown or burgundy we used earlier, and lightly sweep it under your lower lash line.
Use a pencil brush for precision, and connect it with your outer corner shadow to make it look seamless. Once that’s done, take your transition shade again (the warm brown or burnt orange), and soften the edges of the lower lash line so it looks more smoked out rather than harsh.
Basically, we’re trying to make our eyes scream drama but in a “I woke up like this” kinda way, not the Real Housewives kind of way. 😜
Step 6: Eyeliner and Mascara (Big Drama, Babe) 🎭
Time to bring in some eyeliner, babes. You can go as bold or as soft as you like with this one! Personally, I’m into using some jet black or deep brown pencil liner for that smudgy effect, because it’s effortlessly cool and gives off those grungy fall vibes. Apply it along your upper lash line and if you’re feelin’ it, even along your waterline.
Then, grab your mascara and GO TO TOWN. I’m talking at least two to three coats on those lashes. We need full-on Bambi eyes here.
Optional: If you’re team falsies, now’s the time to bring out your favorite pair. Just make sure they’re more flirty than dramatic. Ain’t nobody got time for super thick lashes covering up all the work we just did on the eyeshadow!
Step 7: Finishing Touches — Inner Corner and Brow Bone ✨
We’re almost there, fam. The last little finishing touches make such a difference, tho, so don’t skip these steps! Grab a light shimmery shade (maybe even what you used on your lid) and pop it into your inner corners. I like using a pearl or champagne color here to really brighten my eyes. It’s like a built-in ring light for your face. 🤩
Then, apply that same light shimmer (or a soft matte highlight) right under your brow bone. It’ll give your eyes a little lift and make everything look pulled together and just chef’s kiss.
Step 8: Lips & Cheeks — Match the Vibes 🍂
Your eyes are giving major fall vibes right now, so we gotta balance it out with the rest of the face. You don’t wanna go too crazy on the lips because we already have a pretty intense eye, but a warm-toned nude or soft peach lipstick would complement the look beautifully.
For cheeks, a soft peachy blush with maybe a hint of bronzer will tie everything together! Want some extra glow on the cheeks? Of course, you do. Add a little highlighter on the highest points of your face — I’m talking cheekbones and the tip of your nose for that cute-as-a-fox glow.
Ready. Set. Slay. 🔥
And that’s a wrap, babes! Your fall smokey eye look is complete, and honestly? You’re serving ALL the vibes this season. This look is perfect for all your autumn adventures — from coffee dates to pumpkin patch photo shoots, and beyond.
Remember, makeup’s all about having fun and experimenting. There’s no right or wrong, it’s about feeling yourself and expressing your personality. So, play around with these techniques and make the look your own!
Fall makeup is like cozying up in your favorite sweater… But for your face!
