Masquerade Ball Mystery: Dramatic Eyes Tutorial

Okay, so you’re getting ready for a Masquerade Ball, and lemme guess: you need those dramatic eyes that will seriously make people wonder who you even ARE under that mask! Yeahhh, I gotchu. 😊 Here’s the thing — the mask might hide half of your face, but that other half? We’re about to SLAY it. Prepare for smoldering, mesmerizing eyes that will literally steal all the attention, with or without a mask. Let’s just say, the eyes are going to shout main character vibes from across any room.

So, get your brushes ready, sip your iced coffee (no judgment if it’s that aesthetic pumpkin cold brew), and let’s dive into the most extra eye look you’ve probably ever done.

Step 1: Prime Those Lids, Babe!

Okay, so first things first: primer. If you’re trying to make your eye makeup last all night — like, through the dancing, the pics for Insta, EVERYTHING — you gotta lay down a solid base. This is like the trust fall of eyeshadow looks. If your primer game’s off, your whole look will flop.

I’m obsessed with Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. It’s been my go-to since forever, and trust me, it holds down the drama you’re about to create.

Always use primer if you want your eyeshadow to pop and last longer. Like, it’s non-negotiable.

Step 2: Transition Shading (aka the “Security Blanket”)

One thing I swear by: a smooth transition, aka a softer color to build up the bolder shades. A solid transition shade will keep the edges all soft and blended, which makes your eyes look fire 🔥.

Reach for a soft brown, taupe, or warm orangey tone! I usually grab Too Faced’s Natural Matte Palette and dip into “Honey Butter” or “Nudie”. Use a fluffy brush (like the Morphe M441) to sweep it right into your crease. It basically makes sure any crazy bold color doesn’t look streaky. Think smooth blend, not a harsh line!

Start with a light hand (trust me on this). You can always build, but once it’s too dark, it gets messy.

Step 3: Smoke It Out – Mysterious Vibes Only

And now, the reason we’re ALL here: smoky eyes. For that mysterious-don’t-mind-me-maybe-I’m-a-vampire vibe.

Grab a rich black or deep charcoal. You don’t need to go overboard right away. Build it up gradually, babe. I love getting that dark outer corner going and blending it toward the middle part of the lid. The outer corners should be the smokiest; you want that “I’ve got a secret” energy.

If you’re looking for a good black shade, I swear by Anastasia Beverly Hills “Noir”. This one is straight jet-black, no weird blue or grey tints.

Pro-tip: When you’re blending, hold your brush at the end of the handle. I know it feels weird at first, but it gives you more control and prevents those accidental panda eyes.

Step 4: Add Drama with Shimmer

Because a masquerade can’t be ALL matte, right? At some point you gotta add ✨ SHIMMER ✨!

Take a gorgeous shimmery shade that literally sparkles — like “Stila Metallics or Natasha Denona’s “Glam Palette”. You want something eye-catching enough that people double take when you blink! I usually go for a silver, metallic taupe, or even a gold if the event’s a lil’ fancier. Pack that shimmer all over the center of the lid, blending it into that smoky outer corner.

Oh, and use your finger or a flat brush for more precision. Trust me, fingertips make shimmer pop more than a brush ever will! You’re literally pressing all that sparkle directly in.

If you want shimmer to look its brightest, try applying it with your finger. It’s next-level intensity!

Step 5: Line Like You Mean It

Alright. Eyeliner time. Liquid, pencil, gel — whatever makes you feel your fiercest, use it. But don’t just do a thin line; go BIG. This is a masquerade, not a “subtle-statement” moment. Drag that liner long and sharp to lift those eyes. We’re talking full-on winged liner that screams cat-eye realness 🐱.

For this look, I LIVE for KVD Beauty’s Tattoo Liner in “Trooper”. Girl, if I’m committing to bold eyeliner, it has to be black-black, as in deepest black you’ve ever seen. I’m going extended sharp wings — that lift your whole energy. Not to mention, your mask will probably have an upward curve, so the flicky eyeliner will follow that vibe and blend it all together.

For extra spice, you can even line your waterline with some black kohl, or go in with white for a more open eye. Either way, make sure those wings are SO sharp that you could cut glass.

Step 6: Inner Corner Poppin’ Bright Moment

This is my secret sauce (and this makes SUCH a difference). After you’ve smoked out your lids and packed that shimmer on, you gotta hit the inner corners with something bright. A glittery silver, champagne, or even a stark white will take the look from cute to instantly iconic.

Everyone always forgets this step, but adding a bright inner corner makes your eyes look super wide and awake — even if you’re secretly running on caffeine and vibes.

I usually dip into Fenty Beauty’s Killawatt in “Lightning Dust”, and gurl, let me just say, it’ll change your life.

Step 7: Lash Drama or Bust

Honestly, if you haven’t added falsies, are you even trying?! 😂 You have options here. Go full glam with thick, voluminous falsies (I’m talking Lilly Lashes in “Miami” vibes), or if you’re more into the natural-but-enhanced look, go for some flirty wispy lashes.

The point is: lashes matter. Don’t skip them. If falsies aren’t your thing, that’s cool too — just make sure you’re loading your own lashes up with two coats of mascara (at least). Try Too Faced’s “Better Than Sex” Mascara for some truly insane volume. Fluttery, spidery lashes add a whole drama queen touch to your eyes that we’re living for.

Step 8: Brow Time (Slay Those Brows)

Do not neglect your brows, okay?! When you’re doing a big look like this, brows ground everything. They’re like the perfect frame for this face-paint masterpiece. You want brows that are snatched but not overpowering the eye look.

Stop what you’re doing and go grab a brow pencil if you’re out. I use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz to fill in sparse areas (my 2012 over-plucking era still haunts me). Then, grab brow gel — I adore the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow to give it some oomph and keep the hairs in place. The brow gel should be like hairspray for your eyebrows!

Step 9: Don’t Forget Outer Balance: Highlight + Conceal

After all that work on the eyes, we need some face framing action. A bright under-eye concealer will make everything pop even more. Plus, it cleans up any fallout drama from earlier. Use your fave concealer (Tarte Shape Tape is my ride or die) and brighten under your eyes in a V-shape. Tap it in with a beauty sponge, and BAM — you’re glowing, sis.

For a full flawless finish, dust some translucent powder wherever you concealed (I use Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder). It locks everything in for hours. Oh, and if you wanna keep everything EXTRA, use a bit of highlight on your cheekbones — that will catch the light from every angle under that ballroom lighting.

Step 10: Mask or No Mask? Either Way: You WIN.

Okay, here’s the spill the tea moment: mask or no mask, your eye look needs to command the night. So if you’re wearing the cutest mask in existence, or just rocking the makeup solo, congrats, you’re going to look FLAWLESS. The mystery is really in the eyes, and yours are gonna leave everyone else absolutely shook all night.

Go for confidence and totally own the room!
