Music Festival Neon Makeup Tutorial

Ok first of all: music festivals are not just about the music. I mean, yes, they totally are. But also? They are full-on runways. Like Coachella? That’s practically Fashion Week with glitter and fringe. And the makeup looks? OMG my fave part.

So if you’re planning to dance yourself silly under the stars while looking like a neon dream, let’s get into it. I’m talking high-voltage colors, sparkle, and glowy skin that could be spotted from outer space. This neon makeup tutorial is easy to follow, fun to pull off, and ridiculously cute for any festival weekend.

Prepping the Canvas: Glowy Skin is EVERYTHING

Okay so hear me out: neon makeup pops way harder on fresh, bouncy skin. And honestly? Glowy skin always wins at festivals.

I usually start with a hydrating primer with a little sheen. Like the Milk Hydro Grip or the e.l.f. Power Grip Primer. Something sticky enough to hold your makeup through dust storms, mosh pits, and like eight hours of dancing.

Follow that with a dewy foundation or skin tint. Nothing heavy. I love Rare Beauty’s tinted moisturizer or Kosas Revealer Foundation. My go-to is to blend it in using a damp sponge, mainly because brushes can make it look streaky if your skin is super moisturized.

Then: concealer where needed. Not to erase everything, just to bounce some light and sharpen up your features a little.

Set lightly. Seriously, only where you get oily or your makeup might crease. Think around the nose, under the eyes, and maybe your forehead if you get sweaty.

Music festivals are basically cardio, sunscreen, and selfies ;  so make your base something that can survive all three.

Brows: Keep ’em Easy but Lifted

We’re not blocking brows for drag today. Just something fluffy that won’t fight with the eyes.

I’ll just brush mine up with a spoolie, fill in some gaps using a tiny brow pen (Glossier Brow Flick is bomb), then lock it with a clear gel. If you’re doing more of a 90s look and want thinner brows ;  do you. Just keep them clean and set.

The Star of the Show: Neon Eyes

This is where the fun starts. Neon is not subtle. And that’s the point, right?

So. There are three ways you can go here:

Neon Eye Looks Vibe
Neon Graphic Liner Clean, artsy, minimalist but bold
Full Neon Smokey Eye Loud, dramatic, center-of-attention
Mixed Brights with Glitter Playful, chaotic good

I’ll walk you through my fave: the neon liner with UV glow.

Step 1: Prime Those Lids

Seriously, don’t skip this. A good eye primer makes everything stick better and makes the color way more intense.

I’m obsessed with the P. Louise Base or the Urban Decay Primer Potion. You can even go a shade lighter than your skin tone to make the color pop more.

Step 2: Pack on the Color

Use a flat synthetic brush and just tap the shadow on. No sweeping at this point. Packing helps avoid patchiness.

My neon shades of choice:
– Electric blue
– Highlighter yellow
– Hot pink
– Radioactive green (yes please)

For this tutorial, I’m using a bright pink from the SUVA Beauty UV Taffies palette (it literally glows under blacklight) and an electric orange from the Huda Beauty Electric Obsessions palette. Those two together? Magic.

If you’re doing a graphic liner, pick up a water-activated paint like Glisten Cosmetics or the Danessa Myricks Colorfix. Use a precision liner brush and sketch out a wing or whatever shape you want. Let it dry between layers if you’re going more complex.

Step 3: Add Accents

Want to add a little glitter or shimmer? Go off. I personally love a neon wing with a shimmer halo in the center of the lid. Gets eyes sparkling in the sunlight.

For glitter, use a good adhesive (NYX Glitter Primer or Mehron Mixing Liquid) so it doesn’t end up halfway down your face by 2 PM.

Step 4: Mascara and Optionals

You could go classic black, but a colored mascara takes the vibe next level. Try cobalt blue, neon pink, or white. Add falsies if you want more impact. Try to find a fluttery lash that doesn’t totally cover up your hard work.

Neon makeup doesn’t whisper. It shouts. That’s the whole point.

Let’s Not Forget the Cheeks

OK so with big colorful eyes, some people think you have to tone everything else down. But like… why?

I’m team blush-all-the-way. Try a bold blush that complements your eye look. Going pink on the lids? Matchy-match with a cool pink on the cheeks. Using green and yellow? Try a coral or peachy blush.

Cream blushes are clutch here. They melt into the skin and keep things juicy looking. I love ones like Tower 28 or the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch (honestly any shade slaps).

And yes: you can absolutely layer powder blush on top to set or amp it up. Who’s stopping you?

Highlight or Glowstick Moment?

If you’re gonna glow, you better GLOW.

Use holographic highlighters if you wanna be extra. Like Fenty Beauty’s Diamond Bomb or Becca (RIP) ;  but find a comparable dupe like Wet n Wild’s Megaglo.

Apply to your cheekbones, temples, nose bridge, inner corner ;  wherever you want to catch the light.

Wanna really commit? Get creative with face stickers, holographic foil tattoos, or even neon face paint.

Lips that Don’t Quit

Nobody wants to be babysitting smeared lipstick during DJ sets. So here’s the move:

  • Start with a lip liner to shape your lips and give your gloss/stain something to stick to
  • Go for something bold but budgeproof ;  like a matte neon liquid lip or tinted balm
  • Or if your eyes are super intense, go for a clear gloss or subtle pink to balance things a little

My personal ride-or-die is the Maybelline SuperStay Ink Crayon in Laugh Louder. Stays on, feels light, and doesn’t flake even if you’re drinking kombucha in the middle of a crowd.

Set It, Forget It, and Touch Up Smart

Last step: setting spray. Not optional. I always keep one in my festival kit ;  something like the Urban Decay All Nighter does what it says.

Take a travel-size in your bag along with optional touch-up stuff:

Mini-Festival Makeup Kit Musts
Travel mirror
Lip gloss or balm
Blotting papers or powder
Waterproof eyeliner for touch-up
Multipurpose stick for lips and cheeks
Q-tips for cleanup or reblending
Extra lashes or lash glue is optional but lifesaving

Festivals are where glitter is basically a skincare step. Don’t fight it. Use it.

Final Thoughts, Kinda

Honestly? Neon makeup is just fun. It doesn’t have to be flawless. It doesn’t even have to be symmetrical (like, art isn’t always even, right?).

Just let your makeup reflect you ;  wild, spontaneous, high-energy, a little messy but in a good way.

And don’t stress if it’s not looking exactly how you planned it in your head. Festival makeup is supposed to be more play than perfection. So slap on that UV liner, throw some rhinestones on your cheekbones, and let the music take it from there.

Oh, and wear sunscreen. Seriously. That glitter won’t protect your face ;  I learned that the hard way in 2022.

So go out, dance like you’re in a Gaga video, take way too many selfies, and glow like the magical highlighter being that you are.

Tag me if you end up trying this look, I wanna see the chaos and color.
